"You're over-qualified for this job."

Fewer phrases make less sense to me.

You're sitting across from someone in a position to hire you. You've spent countless hours prepping for the interview -- heck, trying to even garner the interview.

You've gone through walk-up interviews with his subordinates and have made sure to dot every "i" and cross every "t."

And, just when you think the interview couldn't go any better, the boss says that he thinks you're over-qualified for the position.

"Yeah, but I'm a bargain," came to mind but I just asked him to clarify instead.

How would you respond?

It all depends on the position... is it a position you are applying for to make a living.... or live by making?

If live by making... then the interest and compassion you may have should be shown... further expressed, this must be seen (no matter the outcome). I would not walk away... until it is further explained what "over-qualified" terms they are speaking about and you are somewhat heard... with passive permission.

What was his clarification?

If... it is to make a living... and not of much interest, just financial means... I would take it as a divine sign, perhaps express the areas that may attract you to "the position", give your shared words... if there is a sign that the "over-qualification" stance is still on... you at least know you did your best. rose

After he clarified, I explained how I was a good fit for the job. Part of the interview, he seemed to be trying to push my buttons, get inside my head.

I'll find out, within a few days, what he decided.

I know how you feel.

I had this happen to me over and over and over.

and Thread, it does make sense from an employer stand point. Why hire someone that may leave in 6 months? They realize that its just a "job" to you but they don't want to have to go through the process all over again when you decide that the job isn't fulfilling.

this is very true.

Threadbare, I honestly believe that if a job/person/whatever does want you then you must not want it. It could be that you wouldn't be happy in the place, even if you are a good fit for the job description.

Yeah, I was once told I was over qualified when I applied to do data entry at Spirax Sarco. I said I was tired of temping and just wanted something good and steady to commit to. They hired me and after 4 months when I'd saved enough to come out to Thailand, I left. lol

What else can ya do if you only need to work for a few months? Temping gets old real quick.

I do get why employers say this then.

I totally agree, but at the same time I wonder why they would tell the candidate they're overqualified unless they have decided against hiring them. I mean from the candidate's standpoint, what can be more demotivating than finding out that even the person offering the job thinks it's too shitty for you? smile

That really sucks threadbare. I am sure whatever happens, you will be ok. cool

I was once refused a Performance Related Pay Rise because my New Manager didn't like me !!!

He even told me that he didn't like me which is why I 'Didn't deserve it', which was a mistake as I put a formal complaint in and he got his ass kicked lol

The same Manager even refused me Job Related Training as in his words "No Shop Floor staff should have higher qualification than their Managers".....

The last converstation I had with him was hilarious, He was really mad because he had gotten into trouble and he was standing there shouting and swearing at me, even called me names. When he finished I just smiled and said "Thank You for your Input" and walked away. lol

He got fired shortly after.

Stressed Out lyrics

Artist - A Tribe Called Quest
Album - Beats Rhymes Life
Lyrics - Stressed Out

Intro/Chorus: Faith Evans

I really know how it feels to be, stressed out, stressed out
When you're face to face with your adversity
I really know how it feels to be, stressed out, stressed out
We're gonna make this thing work out eventually

Verse One: Consequence, Q-Tip

Yo I ain't one to complain but there's things in the game
(What's your name?) Consequence, I'm tight, burnt like flames
(And why's that?) American dreams, they got this ghetto kid in a fiend

Don't stress that cause it's not in your bloodstream
Your whole being, comes from greatness, d'you remember
Shatan got you caught in the storms of December
And brothers on the block packin nines like September
Crazy situations keeps pockets on slender

Yo I be on the avenue where they be actin brand new
I'm splurgin on these Reebok joints for shorty boo

All of a sudden, I saw these two kids frontin
Talkin out they joints but they wasn't sayin nuttin
My hand was on my toolie they was actin unruly
(Say word) Yo word up, yo I was tight caught up
But I swallowed my pride and let that nonsense ride
Because I'm positive it seems that negative dies

Yo we was at the dice game makin these cats look silly
Flamin, steady runnin off at the Willie

I had my cash mixed, my rent due, with my play-dough
I gotta see some loot so all my girls I blow
Shook them shits in my palm let em hit the flo'
Kept my eyeballs scopin for them pigs po-po
I got to go on the ave see my parole by fo'
But I gotta steady freak these boys like JoJo

And I was doin it, til I met Ike, Spike, and Mike
One roll, they had my pockets thirstier than Sprite

Yo I know the feelin, when you feelin like a villain
You be havin good thoughts but the evils be revealin
and the stresses of life can take you off the right path (no doubt)
Jealousy and envy tends to infiltrate your staff
We gotta hold it down so we can move on past
all adversities, so we can get through fast, like that

Chorus

Verse Two: Consequence

You got the N.W.O. (low cash flow)
Your baby's on the way (and you don't know who)
And crosstown niggaz tryin to (bust at you)
Aiyyo they got me stressed out (and you don't know what to do)
So frame this Kodak black, and vision to my contact
with a poultry scrap, workers get pistol smacked
The switch hittin Queens, niggaz liquid sword spittin
with raw poppy, and now your first love is krill
Your vision of the mil got crept like Hey Lover
Tried to rise to the top, you just couldn't recover
And all I want is my laceration of the pie
to get this whip cream before the water runs dry
Niggaz flashdancin yo I don't know why
You're sick of snitchin, she got you cruisin to the pokey
like Smokey, the stress be tryin to squeeze out a homey
While I be tryin to get star status like Shinobi
So we can build a dynasty, just like the Toby's
And all I want, is the world to know my steez
These money hungry niggaz is seven thirty
And got me stressed out like these frog MC's

Chorus

Outro: Faith Evans

Don't worry we gon make it (gonna make it)
Don't worry we gon make it (oh yeah)
Don't worry we gon make it (gonna make it)
We gon make it (gotta make it)
Don't worry we gon make it (gotta make it)
We're gonna make it (we gotta make it)
Don't worry we gon make it (we gonna make it)
We gonna make it (ohhhhh)
Don't worry we gon make it (ohhhhh)
Don't worry we gon make it (gonna make it)
Don't worry we gon make it (ohhhhh)
We gon make it (ahaowwhwwww)
Don't worry we gon make it (ahahwwww)
I know we gonna make it (we're gonna make it)
C'mon baby we gon make it (yeahhhh)
We gon make it (yeahhahhahhhh)
Don't worry we gon make it (we're gonna make it)
We've gotta make it (we've gotta make it)
We've gotta make it (oh yeah)
Know we're gonna make it
We're gonna make it, gonna make it, we gotta make it, know we gonna make it...

Good points, both nod

Why even invite someone for an interview when you know the person is over qualified AND you're gonna make a point out of it?

So depending on how vital the job was, i would ask just that.

Yeah, I was fairly stunned. I thought about that afterwards, though: "Your subordinate tells me you want someone who's polished, and then you tell me I'm over-qualified... Disconnect... hmm "

Hey, all. Thanks for the great words of encouragement. Yesterday afternoon was spent strategizing and figuring out what I'm going to need to do to get to where I need to be.

So, I've decided to start saving up to go back to school. It's time to pick up a new skill set ... so I can be really over-qualified for far better-paying jobs.

Education is always good! I need to start my Masters, for sure. Just... don't get into the painful case of school loan debt, Mr. Threadbare. My job, now pays 80 % of our school cost! But I still have my school loans I owe from previous years.

Ahh, this Org... disbelief

yeah, I'm believing that the Lord will make my next job one that will facilitate saving at a higher rate.
