"You're over-qualified for this job." Fewer phrases make less sense to me.
You're sitting across from someone in a position to hire you. You've spent countless hours prepping for the interview -- heck, trying to even garner the interview. You've gone through walk-up interviews with his subordinates and have made sure to dot every "i" and cross every "t." And, just when you think the interview couldn't go any better, the boss says that he thinks you're over-qualified for the position. "Yeah, but I'm a bargain," came to mind but I just asked him to clarify instead. How would you respond?

Moderator | I have no idea what I would say...but I'm sorry that you have been having a hard time lately.
I trust that the Lord has put me where I need to be, and I trust he will do the same for you. It's the wait that's the killer. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |

It all depends on the position... is it a position you are applying for to make a living.... or live by making?
If live by making... then the interest and compassion you may have should be shown... further expressed, this must be seen (no matter the outcome). I would not walk away... until it is further explained what "over-qualified" terms they are speaking about and you are somewhat heard... with passive permission. What was his clarification? If... it is to make a living... and not of much interest, just financial means... I would take it as a divine sign, perhaps express the areas that may attract you to "the position", give your shared words... if there is a sign that the "over-qualification" stance is still on... you at least know you did your best. I'll find out, within a few days, what he decided.

I know how you feel.
I had this happen to me over and over and over. and Thread, it does make sense from an employer stand point. Why hire someone that may leave in 6 months? They realize that its just a "job" to you but they don't want to have to go through the process all over again when you decide that the job isn't fulfilling. I HATE IT but I get it.

Threadbare, I honestly believe that if a job/person/whatever does want you then you must not want it. It could be that you wouldn't be happy in the place, even if you are a good fit for the job description. hang in there. I'll be sending positive thoughts your way.

Wow, ThreadBare. I haven't seen you around much so I figured you'd found a job and were busy. Dang. I'm sick and tired of the Prince fans being sick and tired of the Prince fans that are sick and tired!

Yeah, I was once told I was over qualified when I applied to do data entry at Spirax Sarco. I said I was tired of temping and just wanted something good and steady to commit to. They hired me and after 4 months when I'd saved enough to come out to Thailand, I left. What else can ya do if you only need to work for a few months? Temping gets old real quick. I do get why employers say this then.

I totally agree, but at the same time I wonder why they would tell the candidate they're overqualified unless they have decided against hiring them. I mean from the candidate's standpoint, what can be more demotivating than finding out that even the person offering the job thinks it's too shitty for you?

That really sucks threadbare. I am sure whatever happens, you will be ok.
I was once refused a Performance Related Pay Rise because my New Manager didn't like me !!! He even told me that he didn't like me which is why I 'Didn't deserve it', which was a mistake as I put a formal complaint in and he got his ass kicked The same Manager even refused me Job Related Training as in his words "No Shop Floor staff should have higher qualification than their Managers"..... The last converstation I had with him was hilarious, He was really mad because he had gotten into trouble and he was standing there shouting and swearing at me, even called me names. When he finished I just smiled and said "Thank You for your Input" and walked away. He got fired shortly after.

Good points, both Why even invite someone for an interview when you know the person is over qualified AND you're gonna make a point out of it? So depending on how vital the job was, i would ask just that. [Edited 7/19/06 5:58am] You don't scare me; i got kids

I thought about that afterwards, though: "Your subordinate tells me you want someone who's polished, and then you tell me I'm over-qualified... Disconnect... "

Hey, all. Thanks for the great words of encouragement. Yesterday afternoon was spent strategizing and figuring out what I'm going to need to do to get to where I need to be.
So, I've decided to start saving up to go back to school. It's time to pick up a new skill set ... so I can be really over-qualified for far better-paying jobs.

I need to start my Masters, for sure. Just... don't get into the painful case of school loan debt, Mr. Threadbare. My job, now pays 80 % of our school cost! But I still have my school loans I owe from previous years.
