Well, what many sports photographers do is use an extremely fast shutter speed. This means that the camera registers very little movement but also very little light, so they usually have to compensate for that by using extremely lightsensitive film. Some digital cameras allow you to set both shutter speed and ASA (lightsensitivity), in which case you could figure out your own optimal setting. I experimented with that for fun recently and me and a friend took some pictures of each other jumping and made it look like we were hovering in the air, very much in focus. It was pretty cool (I believe the settings we used were 1/5000 of a second and 1600 ASA). If you want a simpler and cheaper camera, just look for one with an "action" setting as was previously mentioned on this thread.

I recommend the Nikon D50 it's great value for money I got mine at Teds.

oooh have u tried taking action shots with it hun..and can u show me some example pics...and how much was it hun? Sheesh this sounds like 20 questions

but retina has the D70 which is the next model up and my camera can do the same thing

Thanks! I was surprised how well it turned out since I just made up my own theory about how to do it - and later found out that that is actually the way to do it.

technically the D70S is next model up from mine in price and a few features like remote flash triggering etc, and yours is the camera before that so I'm guessing they are similar
