MACBOOK - Call me a hypocrite

So I know that I'm going to come off as being kind of a hypocrite since I still firmly believe that getting a PC-based laptop like the Sony or HP laptops is my best choice, but I'm in the market for a laptop and just can't get over how much I love the Macbooks.

Should I just go ahead and buy a macbook? How does it stack up against the Powermace (which is out of my price range for what I want to do--which is creative writing (and even more creative spelling) and basic computer functions.

I already have a PC and do most of my power user crap on it, and I really am doing less and less of that since I'm not longer in a technical roll. The only disadvantage I can think of with going with a mac is that Macs are normally used by pussies and I would forever be known as a mac pussy. But they are so cute, I just can't help myself.

I played with a macbook at CompUSA yesterday and figure I will probably end up getting it.

Does anyone know any good third party vendors that offer software for it? I've noticed the Apple site is rather limited in selection. I also love the black model, but I'm just not keen on shelling out 150 bucks for the color alone.

You can now install Windows XP on a MacBook - so get it and stick with Windows goodness and compatability.

i love mac's but i agree, since windows xp can be installed you don't have to decide between the two, which makes it all the more attractive imo

I'm getting a MacBook for Uni, but I'm not going anywhere near OS X. I've used OS X now for about 5 years and I still think it needs some massive improvement. As far as I can tell it's all eye candy and prettiness, but when you want to do the real, nitty-gritty geek stuff it tries to hide it all for you behind friendly (and ergo infuriating) dialogue boxes. mad mad mad

drool Photoshop.

Anyway...
Well, in Windows, finding system files, creating batch files and things like that is easy. I've found trying to create any automated process a nightmare with macs, even with a tutorial - and when I finally get there, the fact that they still try to make it look friendly and easy, even though I'm a evidently a geek to want to mess around with that stuff, really pisses me off because it ends up confusing me!

Could you elaborate on this? I've been using OS X since the week of release (and NeXTSTEP - which is what OS X actually is, more or less) since before there was a concept of god. I've never had a problem doing 'geeky' stuff.

I don't understand what would be hard for you in either of those cases.

If you're not going to be using it for graphics, why not just go for a less expensive windows-based laptop?

Ummm, but MacBook's are PC-based. You can run Windows or *nix on them just like any other machine. Apple even gives you the needed drivers for Windows XP. They just *happen* to be able to, and ship with, OS X because that's what works best for Apple and their target market.

Your best place to start looking for software is the OS X section of versiontracker.com I think. They don't list everything but a good portion of stuff is there. If you need a particular bit of software, feel free to ask and I'll point you in the right direction.

Umm, a similarly configured Dell notebook is not really cheaper than a MacBook. ...and Macs are great for a lot more than just graphics, having almost total freedom from viruses, spyware and the like is never a bad thing, for a start.

I had one of those! (infact I think I might still have somewhere)

By the time I got it though it was out of date and the games hard to find. Loved it though. I think there was a game called Blue Sky or something that was Excellent.

Um...what are you talking about? OS X is essentially Unix (well, technically a derivative of the OS from a NeXT Machine, which is Unix based). You can't get much more geeky than that. Perhaps RTFM applies here? ;^)
