Well... I've been doing alright since I started my whole thing in about mid-january. And I had to count calories at the beginning as it's the only way to know exactly what I'm taking in, I don't anymore, but that's cause after 7 months, I've got a good idea about everything I eat. Though, once in a while I go back to having a stricter week or two and count everything again, to sort of check in with myself.
You're right, cut out the cookies, the frapp and the brownie and that woulda been a great day. How 'bout just one of the 3 instead? I'm not as strict with myself as I was when I started this whole thing, (and I'm not losing as fast as I was then) but I'm more down to the 'every choice counts' philosophy and it's still working.
Also - no need to cut out snacks if they're healthy. Eat as many raw veggies as you like. Carrots are of course easiest but get creative. Sugar snap peas, radishes, cut up red pepper strips and bring them w/you to work. Eat fruit 3 times a day. I often have fruit for dessert and I splurge on special stuff, not just a banana or apple. (That and it seems everything's in season now, so it's sooooo good.)

As for the eating enough, make sure to have a snack about 30 minutes before working out. I have to or I have a real problem. Once I got uber dizzy and tried to drive home. Bad idea. I ended up pulling the car over to throw up on my way home. That's an extreme example, but it happened (not quite that bad) a few times before I got my calorie intake down.

ANd the weight training is gonna burn WAY more fat than the cardio. The cardio's good for your heart and lungs and such, but it's the weight training that really burns the fat.

Hope any of this helps. lol.

I have finally lost 14 LBS that I had put on..... I follow much the same workout schedule as above and I consume 1500 calories a day in any category I desire...although like Carrie said, I don't really have to count all the time because I have it for the most part configured now.
My thoughts are that only having 5-7 to drop and with strength training involved.... perhaps you just need to give it a few more weeks as muscle which is great for burning in the long run might be preventing the scale from moving for a short period of time.
I agree with the eating 5 times a day in smaller amounts as it tells the body you are not trying to starve it and you want to keep the metabolism rolling along. Its also better to eat in a way that is consistent with a life long change. Something to restrictive sets up for binging etc....
That said, I had to give up alcohol... No matter which use choose its an easy 500 calories at the end of a night and I tend to munch while drinking too!

I was getting mentle over the scale not moving but kept on with the pattern and all of a sudden it is dropping nicely! Whew!

congrats, you.

Juice has a lot of sugar calories....maybe you could mix it with club soda or something to get the benefits of the cranberry juice but not the calories.
12 oz, of juice is a lot. Unless you're drinking the lo-cal stuff which is bad because the artificial sweeteners mess around with your insulin levels and make you hungry.

There's 212 calories in 12 oz of regular cranberry juice,46 in a cup of cranberries. Not that you'd eat a cup of cranberries.

That's a good tip - I'm gonna try that today smile

Most of the juices I get are the organic ones from TJ's but they're VERY concentrated & I sometimes cut them w/ water anyway b/c they're so sweet. I don't always do it though, but I think I'll start - excellent suggestion.

I can't give it up totally b/c like someone else mentioned too much restriction will lead to binging - I want to make life-long changes in my eating habits & I think I'll be successful over time but for right now while I'm trying to LOSE (vs. just maintain) I've got to be more strict nod

This is a great thread thumbs up!

But could someone just give me a breakdown on a typical daily diet menu? I don't work well with someone just telling me to cut back on fat foods, or foods with too much sodium...i have to have someone to actually list the choice of foods that I could eat for breakfast, a snack, lunch, a snack, & dinner plus a healthy dessert (which someone said earlier that fruit is great dessert)

i have to have snacks too, or else i'll over eat during one or two of three meals to satisfy those hunger pains in my stomach.

Sometimes I try to do that cardiac diet thing, sometimes called the "Alabama" diet....well one time i was so hungry by the time i got home from work that I was shaking all over the place, i couldn't even hold a pen straight...it was sort of scary, its like an intense nervous feeling...like a panic attack without the difficult breathing...i think i was lacking something...but anyway since i was so hungry i ate the first thing i could get my hands on (or the first thing that my hands was able to grip) and over ate once again. This is why i need snacks, i find that when i eat some carrots, or some slices of cheese, that this doesn't happen to me at the end of the day.

Yea, if I don't snack I'll fuck some shit UP @ meal time lol I'd been doing brown rice crackers which were super low in fat & carbs but they're so expensive I had to stop buying them for a while confused

A good tip is if something is said to be low fat, half fat, reduced fat, even no fat – it will generally be no good for losing weight. Just go for products that never saw fat ever in there fresh produce little lives. Buy products that if you asked them what fat was they would give you a puzzled little look and shake their green bits at you. lol

That's so much easier said than done though sad It's hard for me to keep fresh veggies in the house w/o them going bad... although I guess if my punk ass ate them they wouldn't go bad, huh? falloff

alright, this is a typical day's food for me. lol

Breakfast: Protein bar (no more than 200 calories) and tea w/non-fat milk and sugar.
The protein bar probably isn't the best breakfast, but it's quick and easy to eat at work. And I love my morning tea w/milk and sugar.

mid-morning snack: non-fat yogurt w/fruit (60 calories)

lunch: sandwich of whole grain bread, faux meat deli slices (cause I'm mostly veggie these days), onions, greens (or lettuce, but I like the greens for more vitamins) and mustard and a bag of carrot sticks

afternoon snack: peach

dinner: lemongrass & chili noodles w/tofu and veggies

evening snack/dessert: a small bowl of cherries

breakfast and lunch rarely vary but dinner is usually around 500 calories and can be just about anything. I try to keep raw veggies with me at all times so anytime I get hungry I naw on those. And a few times a week I allow myself to splurge, whether it be ice cream or pizza or some ungodly fried food I'm craving or what have you.

I've been eating this way for 7 months (in addition to working out) and I've lost 33 pounds so far. That's just under 5 pounds a month, which isn't the fastest, but it's working. smile

Mama, you might not realize this, you are straight up on phase two Dr.Agatson's South Beach Diet (with the exception of raw sugar). You could try having a peek at some of their cookbooks to get some more ideas for how to vary things up a bit and get some menu ideas. I too love a good brownie, but when I've gone through times where I wanted to lose, I either purchased a diabetic box of chocolate mousse, or learned how to make hand whipped mousse with Ricotta & Marcapone cheese. I think the recipe goes something like this:

1/4 cup low fat ricotta
1/4 cup low fat marscapone
2 tbsp. low fat milk
1 1/2 -2 heaping tbsp. unsweetened cocoa powder
preferred sweetener to taste (but of course non-sugar is usually advised)

the ricotta-marscapone combo can also be used with a touch of vanilla to make your mousse of choice... by way of adding lemon juice & peel (for lemon mouse), or any sugar free flavored syrup, again with your sweetener of choice...if you make this with a sugar substitute you can have a serving after 1 or 2 of your daily meals without any problem to satisfy your sugar cravings

try taking out your regular juices for a week and substitute them with V8 or tomato juice...

if you need fruit, for a week see if you can stick with fresh blueberries or strawberries...

Are you drining your water? You need 8 glasses of water a day. When you wake up, go to bed, and at your 3 squares will knock out 5 of em. You just have to remember (or force yourself) to get in those other 3...and when feeling snack prone, go for nuts or sugarless hard candy. Just try it for a week and see if you see a drop...

All in all, you're eating some really good things. The only thing that's making you hit your plateau is the presence of sugar. But at least raw sugar is better than refined though...

Here's what's doing for today so far:

    pre-cardio snack
  • green tea smoothie (light soy milk, nonfat froz yogurt, green tea powder, handful of blueberries, ice)

    breakfast
  • iced coffee (coffee, nonfat creamer, a bit of raw sugar)
  • had to finish the green curry salmon w/ brown rice b/c I couldn't refreeze it BUT at least I had it in the morning instead of late at night sad

    lunch
  • lean cuisine (180 calories, I gotta finish these shits sad sad )
  • 12 ounces of cranberry juice cut with water (so really about 8 ounces of juice)

Hopefully I won't fuck it all up tonight when I get home & am starving. I have my little Special K bars incase I want something sweet, those are low in calories (less than 100 I think). And I have my soy chips to snack on before dinner...

I won't have a chance to get to the store until tomorrow but I need to get some fresh veggies & things so I can do better when I'm @ work pray

Not to sound like a commercial....weight watchers doesn't count calories...points. bit easier. I did it , dropped 50. Hit a plateau n quit and gained half back. Needless to say don't get frustrated. cant go back either just don't have the same fire... since I feel like it has to speed off because I feel like a slob. But I'd reccomend it for anyone. This majority fruit n vegetable program is working well. My diet soda addiction is the hardest habit to break!

I know how hard it is to get in all that water...I haaaaate drinking water
mad mad mad. trying to get in those last three glasses gets on my nerves!!!

I found a way to trick myself into it though; I get some of those flavored soluble vitamins that you can drop into water and it makes something like a flavored drink. I carry em in my purse or messenger bag at all times so I can just plop one in a glass of water to give my hands something to do when I get fidgety, and knock out my water quota.

You also might consider for the next month adding some reg. vitamin supplements to your diet. One general multi-vitamin in the morning, and 2 chromium capsules before each meal or workout. The chromium mineral is an all natural fat burner, and the multi-vitamin will pick up the slack with how your body handles the absence of things you were eating before (like getting in those B vitamins for energy that usued to be brought about with the sugar highs from those yummy ass brownines & ice cream treats ) lol . They have chromium vitamins all up and down the isle at Walgreens, Eckerd's, etc for about $7-$10. There are some that are specifically marketed towards dieters and excercisers so you can just follow their dosage directions on the label. I have found that they really help a lot in breaking down that fat...5 more weeks and you'll prob. be able to get into your "skinny jeans" just in time for the last round of summer parties, girl cool....with cute shoes lol !

Fuck calories! Seriously, fuck them!

When you run, or do exercise, you realise you burn nothing! a 3 mile run at 8.5 miles/hour burns 350 calories for me. Oh great, half a chocolate bar!.

Yet, in doing that for 4 weeks I lost 2 stone. Calories mean jackshit. Literally fuck all. Their importance has been blown out of the water by diet companies.

Thats a lot of work right there! As an example off the top of my head

Breakfast - fruit (any) wholeweat toast
Lunch - salads with some grilled chicken, salmon, tuna,
Dinner - pasta with tomato or veggie sauces
Supper - Chamomile tea and a carrot!

It's just a lot easier to say don't eat fat and sugar biggrin

What did I eat today so far hmm

Coffee, pear

Coffee

ham salad sandwich, bottle of water

And that is not bad, I am not on a "diet" that is just my diet, I ain't fat and never have been. I am not really bothered about chocolate and stuff though, beer is my vice.

no no no! to beer if you want to loose weight

Just eat less with each meal 3 times a day . No snacking between meals and lots of walking will give you a great baht and no gut. cool

WOW, thanks for the recipe biggrin And no, I'm definitely not getting all my water. I used to be really good about it but I'm constantly slipping on that. I need it not only to lose but for my complexion also sad

Thanks girlie hug

The vitamins in the water is a great idea nod

I've tried chromium in the past but hadn't thought about it lately hmm

Good tips all around biggrin

    Dinner:

  • egg white omlet (spinach, mushrooms, veggie patty, fat free cheese) wrapped in a whole grain tortilla shell w/ less than a teaspoon of pesto (I know - pesto is bad!!! mad )
  • 6 ounces of juice cut w/ water

They say don't eat within 3 hours of going to bed so I gotta stay up a while...

And they didn't have the Weight Watchers lemon cake w/ icing @ the store...

... I gotta get some, they save me from the brownies redface I don't do the point thing but they only count for one point. I wanna try to carrot cake too...

Why is the pesto bad? The olive oil is good for you. Is it the pine nuts you're worried about inside? (as I make a note to check the nutritional content pc)

Yea, I know the olive oil is a good fat but it's pretty potent. I dunno, maybe it's not so bad. And I used so little, gotta have something to lubricate the tortilla lol

I don't believe in drinking my calories....what a waste! Juice packs extra calories on just like soda does. I'll get that fruit from eating fruit. Just can't bring it to myself to drink calories.

I've actually picked up the Dr Ian Fat Smash book. I've never consumed so many fruits and vegetables in my life!

:::wonders how much that book would scare me::: boxed

hmmm

Wonder if you wantto... but i've lost 7 pounds so far.... 23 to go smile

Men are so different. I eat mostly everything, fried, boiled, under sauces, sweet, creamy, whatever tastes good. Men just don't care how we look. hehe
