I need a really easy birthday cake idea (updated with photos) I don't have time to make anything elaborate this year. My son is turning 6 on Sunday. A rectangular or circular cake would be the best what cakes have you "made" for your kids/seen at kids parties? [Edited 7/16/06 18:30pm]

You should consult the Queer Chocalatier, one of Tampa's finest desert chefs!

I hope you can understand the references, not sure what the american equivalents are!
Get a swiss roll, preferably two, cut them lengthways and lay flat on a sheet of baking paper. Then get some Matchstick type sweets and poke them into the swiss rolls kind of like a hedgehog only taller. Any left over, snap in half and `sprinkle` around the outside of the baking paper. Then get some M+Ms and press into the swiss rolls kind of like eyes, only much further back down the swiss roll so they are almost in the middle of the back section near the top. Then put the oven on at gas mark 6 or thereabouts. This part is optional, take some icing sugar and sprinkle over the whole thing to give a `dusty` effect. Then place the whole thing into the bin, go to the shops and buy one. Maybe shaped like a fire engine or something. Don't forget to switch off the oven! Hope this helps!

Angel food cake, make fresh whipped cream and whatever yummy fruit is in season. Any kind of berry works well, as would pineapple, peaches, whatevs. |

I'm in Australia, so this made perfect sense to me, it's what I did last year trying to make a ROBOT CAKE

I've already got hime down for mopping floors, washing windows, getting rid of the pile of sand in the driveway and vacuuming the house, and doing the kid's party games that's a lot of jobs actually, I'm just sorting out the cake, making a pot of bolognese and buying party food

it's the time factor buns can be made in short bursts over a day, cause of the rising times, and frozen ready for whenever. A cake would need to be decorated the day before or the same morning, and I have to mind kids while my husband records, and we have a wedding to go to the night before I so wish it were monday already

Quick trick
Buy a Bionicle Birthday card and cutter the fucker out! He will be the topper. Get a spongecake like you said and frost it. Get that wide plastic black ribbon and wrap it around the sides of the cake like a border. Put the cut out Bionicle on top with candles, Happy Birthday! If you want to get fancy get some black, red and yellow sprinkles and throw some on top. There you go! Baker secret! we just did one for my bro the other day.. he's partially allergic to chocolate so it was a vanilla cake mix that had mango and peach slices at the bottom of the pan ... once it was flipped over it tasted sweet and fruity
