How important is it that your partner shares a musical vibe?

I don't mean Prince specifically, but how important is it that your partner shares your musical taste?

Is this a major factor that would sway you if they weren't quite your 'type' otherwise?

I think that the music someone likes says a fair bit about their personality anyway - and to know that someone else felt the same way about it would definitely be a draw for me. How do you cope when your partner hates the music you like to listen to, and the concerts you attend???

Hehehe, I found out that sharing a musical vibe is VERY important. One of the two major relations I had did not like music that much. He could not understand my dedication.

It frustrated our relatonship at times.

participants in a relationship with me are REQUIRED to have a "musical vibe", even if they are not a musician, like me.

I'm not sure I could seriously date someone who's musical taste I didn't approve of. That sounds awful, I'm sure, but let's face it, I couldn't stand hearing Kenny Chesny or say, Metallica at all hours of the day. neutral

I would go nuts if I went out with someone who listened to music a lot (nvm metallica or something annoying) I like my peace and quiet. The musician in this family only listens to music in his car, never at home hmmm interesting.

I think it's hard any time your interests conflict too much b/c it doesn't leave much for you two to do together, so wtf is the point?? neutral

It would be nice if the musical vibe were at least similar & each person was open to being exposed to new artists. Then you could go to concerts w/o one person being bored, listen around the house w/o complaints, quell any funk that might arise in the car during tense times lol

It also depends on how important music is in your life. I've done the separate lives/belittle everything I like shit too many times before, it's bullshit. It's bad enough if we have different tastes but if you're gonna give me shit about it too??? whofarted
heart prince I never met you, but I LOVE you & I will forever!! Thank you for being YOU - my little Princey, the best to EVER do it prince heart

Consider this: I used to love Frank Zappa, a LOT.
I introduced my soon-to-be-boyfriend to FZ and he subsequently became obsessed with him and bought EVERY CD one could buy, and that was all he listened to, to the point where I didn't enjoy it anymore and it felt stupid to buy all the same CDs myself. We broke up and there is not a single FZ CD in my collection cry

ok, see, I NEED to listen to music a lot. So to be compatible, so would my partner need to too, and the musical tastes should have at least a few big overlaps. Doesn't have to be all together similar, but we've got to be able to respect the other's taste, ya know?

I've never really been in the relationship 'position' but I've always imagined that it would be very important. nod

I can't imagine going out with someone who doesn't appreciate music. omfg There again, as a Prince fan, I'm used to virtually everyone questioning my musical taste. lol

Like Calhoun says, I think somewhere in the middle is best. Either where you share similar musical interests or are open-minded enough to learn about your partner's. nod

I think music and personality go pretty much hand in hand, we are shaped by what we listen to and choose what to listen to, based on who we are. I think you would be unlikely to hit it off in any serious way with someone who had such a conflicting opinion of your likes and dislikes whether it be music or otherwise.

Was that a real encounter?? smile

I hate it when you ask someone what music they're into and they say "Oh, y'know - everything. A bit of this, a bit of that". shrug What they mean is: "I'm too scared to tell you cos you may laugh in my face". boxed

talk to the hand

I'd much rather someone had the complete opposite in terms of musical taste that none at all.

My second bf loved them Dutch schlager kind of music, we used to go to the Jordaan Festival together, where people would sing, wearing gold chains, holding their beer and stuff. I loved that.

Nope. it isn't.
News: Prince pulls his head out his ass in the last moment.
Bad News: Prince wasted too much quality time doing so.

I have the strangest mental picture now lol but I know what you mean. nod What I meant, as well, was that I'd much rather go out with someone who stands by their musical taste - even if I loathe it - than come out with a boring answer such as 'I like everything'. nutty At least you can turn their music off. lol

She has to tolerate some of it at least or she won't work as a girlfriend. If she loves my music, all the better.

LOL HamsterHuey..that was funny.

As mentioned, a pet hate is the reply, 'Oh, I like just general stuff'..

ARGH! Get a brain, get some individuality..!! I know I should be more tolerant, but as music plays a large part in my life, I just don't get it.

Maybe some people aren't lucky enough to have ever found something that clicks with them, I don't know.. But it can't be that hard. Even if it's just a TV advertised artist that's force fed to the general population.

Or maybe some people just don't like music. neutral
