Family Reunions - Yay or Nay?

Do you like or dislike family reunions, and please explain why you feel the way you do.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

Considering I'm about to go to my family reunion in a month, I LOVE 'em.

We are a Down South country family. Lots of 2nd, 3rd and 4th cousins.

My grandpa had about a dozen brothers and sisters. They all had a mess of kids.

He only had one kid. She only had one kid. I only have one kid.

It is fun for us because we get to see all the old folks and talk about my grandparents who I miss very much.

NAY!!
I've been to one reunion. It was torture

A Majority of my "family" members are fake, two faced, gossiping,Christian wanna-bes
Uggghh being in the room with them the air is so thick full of negativity, its sickening disbelief

I've only been to my wife's or friends' family reunions. I hated them all... except for the food. Sadly, I'd expect the same of my own extended family.

I've never felt the love in large crowds like these... even among those the members of which I know. There's too much "cliquishness," too much performing, too much obligation to like everyone (...at least in their face. The daggers come out the minute they turn their back.)

I prefer being with a tiny group of loved ones with whom I really vibe. (hmmm ...Does that mean I'm "cliquish?")

I like them, because you never know whether it might be the last time you'll see some of your relatives. In recent years, I've learned just how true this can be.

my family have never all got together sad
But I liked it at my husband's one in Buenos Aires in 2001. They put it on especially because we were visiting touched 73 family members all in one hired hall with food and dancing! I got very emotional though, when my husbands cousin told me she loved me because I was family and I started to think this is how it should be, not like my repressed family cry

I'll concede that part is true.

I may not like all of my family members but they are funny as hell when they get drunk. And the fact that we "young ones" still like to play jokes on them while they are pissy drunk.

"Fee Fee, Shawnie, Tit, Red, Peanut, Kenny, Keith!! What happened to my mail box? You shot at it Grandpa with the rifle when dem foxes got in the coup. innocent" If he would have looked down he would have seen that each of use had about fifty firecrackers each and my cousin Kenny had the box of matches. We blew up every mail box we could find that night! demon

I started to love them, not a long time ago. It's important to feel your family's love, when they don't judge you.

When I was a kid, I liked it enough, but now I have nothing in common with THOSE PEOPLE.

It happened to me too. But they changed, I changed, and now everything's fine, and it's good.

You should take that as "they're all worthless alcoholics that start fights after two drinks and they have no reason to exist on Earth". Seriously, whenever those people get together they end up in an all-out name calling war. They're hideous folks.

I know all about name-calling and family dinners since I have a Russian relative and an Austrian relative who both fought in the war and still feel very, very strongly about it. You can imagine all the lovely dinners that has led to over the years. confused

And they get at it despite being completely sober...

I think I'm skipping my family reunion this year. My mom's side of the family has one every year and I think I've decided I can get away with going only every other. I go out of obligation and for my mother, not because it's a fun activity for me.
I'm quite estranged from my extended family. They're nice enough people (mostly), but I generally don't feel comfortable. I have nothing in common with them. I'm the youngest grandchild (at 31) and the only one without kids already and many have grandkids. All the women sit together and talk about their children or gossip about other family members and the men sit together and drink beer and talk about sports and hunting. neutral The vast majority all live out in the country (or at least what I call the country) and I don't really know how they spend their time. I don't think they really kow quite what to say to me either so generally I just sit on a lawn chair or picnic bench and watch what's going on around me. ho hum.
