I'm struggling through 'Mr Nice' by Howard Marks. There's so many names to remember in it that I'm finding it hard to follow.

I read this 10 years ago when it first came out, I must say that there are not many books since then that I liked more. Having been to a boarding school myself, a lot of stuff was recognizable (apart from the bizarre stuff that happens in the story). I'm surprised that there hasn't been a film about this story yet, last thing I know is that Gwyneth Paltrow bought the rights for it several years ago..... I never got through 'The Little Friend'..... [Edited 7/10/06 10:28am] A friend gave it to my for my birthday and I read it in about 4 evenings. Couldn't put it down. |

I tend to go through a book every few weeks. Course, I'm currently reading "Setting Free The Bears" which I HATE so it's taking me a while. I should just give it up.

Oh? Why? I don't know what it is. Normally I really like John Irving. But I can't get into this book. I'm halfway in and I've yet to really care about any of the characters. Half the time, I'm forgetting who's who. I keep reading in the hopes that there'll be some pay off by the end. But so far, it's just this messy, sprawling piece of fiction that seems utterly pointles.

I wish, I read that one book( the character was a warden at a prison of some sort in a village in africa?) but I don't remember the name of it, we all agreed and I read it but we never discussed it Yeah, Waiting for The Barbarians by JM Coetzee. Sorry about that, butter. That was a shit time at the Org. We actually did have that discussion, but we did it over at the NPGMC where we started a thread. I tried to contact as many people as I could but I kept getting deactivated.

I think we ought to read only the kind of books that wound and stab us. If the book we are reading doesn't wake us up with a blow on the head, what are we reading it for? ...we need the books that affect us like a disaster, that grieve us deeply, like the death of someone we loved more than ourselves, like being banished into forests far from everyone, like a suicide. A book must be the axe for the frozen sea inside us.

LleeLlee and I had our own litle Book Club! Hey, Ithink that they should make a movie about Truman Capote when he was writing this book. That would be cool! When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.
