There was a family, and in that family there was a man. The Parents went to the man, who was their son, giving him a ring, a one of a kind wonderious ring. They said to their child, now that you are a man, give this ring freely to the woman who would be you true love and your wife. Upon the day that fate did bring the man and woman together, he did give her the ring, and they would be wed in one month, however one week later the man died. The woman, in needs of funds, sells the ring to the salesman. The salesman now owns the ring, but whom is it the ring truly belongs 2?

I think you can own something that doesn't belong to you...but, that ownership would be under false pretenses. In that case, wouldn't you be in possession (not ownership) of this thing?

your house...if you have a mortgage on it....it belongs to the bank until you pay it off..and not many people own a house with no mortgage on it.
