Georgia Southern WR dies after motorcycle wreck

Tavus "Teddy" Craft, a Georgia Southern all-conference wide receiver, has died of injuries sustained in a motorcycle crash Tuesday night near Statesboro.

Craft, a senior from Hart County, was taken to East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro, then airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. A spokesman for Memorial, Michael Notrica, said early Thursday that Craft had died. He would not say when.

Teddy Craft has been a second team All-Southern Conference receiver the last two seasons.

Limited information was available from the school and hospital concerning the two-vehicle crash or the injuries. Craft apparently was wearing a helmet, which is a law in Georgia.

Stacey Craft, Teddy's brother, had said Wednesday that his brother was in a coma and that he thought it had gotten more severe during the day.

Three weeks ago, Super Bowl MVP Ben Roethlisberger was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident that spurred a nationwide debate on motorcycles and athletes. Roethlisberger was not wearing a helmet.

In a prepared statement Wednesday, Georgia Southern athletics director Sam Baker said: "Our foremost concern is for Teddy and his recovery from the accident. On behalf of the entire Georgia Southern community, our thoughts and prayers are with Teddy and his family."

The media relations office said football coach Brian VanGorder and most of the other coaches were out of town and could not be reached for comment.

A second-team All-Southern Conference pick the past two years, Craft led the Eagles in reception yards (319) and touchdowns (five) last season. He caught four of his five touchdown passes during the final two games of 2005.

"My brother is an easygoing guy who loved football," Stacey Craft said. "He got along with everyone. Lots of people are here now, waiting to visit him. I don't think there is anyone who knows him who doesn't like him."

Georgia Southern running back Lynon Jefferson said he knew the accident was serious when he heard Craft had been taken to Savannah.

"At first, I heard he broke his legs, but when I found out he was here, I knew it had to be worse," Jefferson said. "Apparently, he rolled off his bike, and the helmet might've come off.

"We're just praying now."
