I turned off automatic synching, since I use my iPod on my work computer (which has tons of space, so I used this one to rip CDs), and on my home laptop (not much space, but I have more time to make playlists, edit song information etc.). When I edit song information, though (genre, track number etc.) on either the iPod or the computer, how do I get that info to synch? It synchs the songs itself, but seems to ignore the other info, and if the songs are already on the iPod, it doesn't do anything other than check they're already there.

Help, please.

You can only sync with one computer, the one that holds the library.

That's the one I'm trying to do this on, though - I've updated track info in my library (the one that holds the full library), and tried syncing the new info to the existing tracks on the iPod, but it doesn't do it (since it treats it like all it's doing is checking the tracks themselves are there).

I had to delete the old song off of the ipod and add the edited one from the library again, lots of work but I didn't know an easier way to get it done

I would try setting iTunes on that computer to autosynch and plug the iPod once again. It works for me.

This is the number one reason why I don't have an iPod.

I have a 40gb iPod synched to my 40gb laptop. How? I bought an external USB disk drive. They're real cheap this days.
You can have an evergrowing library and the iPod will only automatically synch the 30GB that you set.
Plus, if you format the PC or had a fatal crash you wouldn't lose tons of music files you've spent so long ripping and editing

I got a creative zen nano (1GB). It pretty much plays everything as well as being a flash drive. It's basically a small HD that plays most formats of music. Pretty non proprietary. I got the nano as it is the ONLY thing that has a LINE IN. They have bigger ones that have more features and can hold more...and are cheaper than the iPod and NO STUPID SYNCING. Itunes lets you edit silences off hidden tracks for example.You know those tracks at the end of an album that are 2 songs with a long silence between. You can separate it into two tracks with no silence.

Or you can import two songs together when they are linked in the album so you won't have abrupt endings when playing in shuffle mode.

First thing I'd recommend is explore every iTunes command. Play with the configuration panel so you figure out what you can do.

Can't you record it in your laptop first and then synch it?

Is it just me, or are there CONSTANT problems with ipods? I mean, yes, I'm biased, but I'm being serious, all I ever hear of is problems with the little buggers.

After reading CNET reviews, I think I'm returning my iPod and buying a Creative Zen Vision M 30GB instead. Drag-and-drop is soooo much better than syncing, and not being able to get anything off the iPod onto the computer is a pain. Plus not being able to sync edited information about tracks is frustrating.

In 3 years I've had none of the problems you've had. Never lost a song. My songs synch with info
...but then again my 68 years old mother can't program the Hard Disk Recorder
