Bear on the Loose in Austria!: UPDATE! THE BEAR'S BEEN SHOT!! http://www.dw-world.de/dw...45,00.html
He's been roaming around Bavaria for at least a week now, maybe longer, but he seems to have returned south to Austria in recent days, heading for the Tirol where he was first introduced into the region. Heimweh. 
He seems to be killing sheep and chickens along the way, which is worrisome because he is killing more than he needs to eat. Apparently that's not good. This is the first bear to be in the area since like the 19th century. And he's heading to where my inlaws live!!
Bears are magnificent and frightening. I read a book on Alaska recently by a guy who went hiking through the wilderness with an experienced guide. He knew there were bears in the area, but saw that his guide didn't bring a gun. When he asked him why not, his guide explained that carrying a gun is pointless as it doesn't even slow a bear down. It's just something that will weigh you down as you try to run. (Not that you will be able to outrun a bear...) If you are close enough to a bear to shoot him, you don't have long to live, 
Anyway, now that he's crossed into Austria I hope he stays away from Kufstein!! And I thought America had porous borders! [Edited 6/26/06 17:43pm] | |

Werner Schnappauf has given the shoot to kill order!
Apparently some millionaire has offered to buy the bear or something, they devised some sort of expensive way to catch him.

They look cute...
But he will fuck you up!! We sometimes use "bear" as a term of affection, "honey bear" "he was a big bear of a man," etc., but I don't think we mean by this that the person we are referring to will devour us whole and digest our bones and then go kill our sheep!
P.S. That's not a picture of the wanderlust bear, just some random brown bear. | |

We have had several bear visitors at my summer house in the North Carolina mountains....they are beautiful but....they smell horrible and have dingleberries!!! I once forced my girlfriend and I to sleep in a car in a campground in Oregon because there were no other people around and I had never felt such isolation and silence, being a city boy from Sydney!
The thought of bears being nearby reduced me to a twitching nervous child. Apprently the Oregon brown bears are a little smaller than what I had in mind, but they have still been known to hurt people... badly... they scare the crap out of me.
