They recommend you breastfeed until 6 months of age, and beyond that is personal preference. I wanted to end it before they became so attached they would ask for it for reasons other than hunger (like for comfort), so I nursed all mine to about 10-11 months.
My mother in-law breastfed my husband until he was 2. She said he would be pulling up her top on the subway asking for lechita I didn't want that to happen!
