Top of the Pops cancelled Sad news today - the BBC has announced that they are to cancel Top of the Pops :

BBC director of television Jana Bennett insists the programme, which airs for the last time on July 30, cannot compete with the increasing number of 24-hour music channels. But former presenter Noel Edmonds is devastated by the news, and believes the broadcast giant has made a "dangerous" decision. "It's a huge commodity and kids are still listening to music, even if they are downloading it," he said. "It's a tragedy when a broadcaster doesn't understand such a powerful brand." Bennett said in a statement: "The time has come to bring the show to its natural conclusion." I can't believe they think Top of the Pops is no longer relevant. I've been watching it for 30 years, I'll be sad to see it go. Lemmy, Bowie, Prince, Leonard. RIP. |

Its a British institute, but to be fair i was expecting to hear this about 5 years ago if not longer.Back in the 80s our whole family would watch it, i think my dad only watched it so he could complain about everyones singing.He used to get especially wound up about Duran Durans Wild Boys.
I would say it just isnt family friendly anymore with videos and songs that are too risque. Coupled with the fact that it just isnt grounbreaking anymore and no ammount of guest presenters can help it. Fuck the funk - it's time to ditch the worn-out Vegas horns fills, pick up the geee-tar and finally ROCK THE MUTHA-FUCKER!! He hinted at this on Chaos, now it's time to step up and fully DELIVER!!

It's just started to get a bit better too! Playing relatively unknown artists a bit more among the usual hit list.
Sadly, lost the appeal it had. It was the absolute dogs for many, many years - but it's believed to be less important now we have 60 million channels devoted to music videos. That's true to some extent - and would be especially true if we were still in the 'miming years', but for me Top of the Pops is now about the live performances - look at Gnarls Barkley's recent performance of Crazy on the show. It was absolutely sensational. That's the sort of thing i'll miss now.  | |

Times move on and some things lose their place. The way music is consumed today is hugely different to even 5 years ago, let alone when TOTP was first aired.
On a slightly positive note, Dr Who was binned as it had lost it's way, now it's back and the most popular thing in the world ever. Maybe someone at the BBC in the future will resurrect it and make it relevant again. With Billie Piper presenting!  | |

RIP TOTP. It has been getting better in recent years  - from the ones I've seen - but I am surprised that it's still going, to be honest. Silly as they were, at least the old style DJs that used to present it were connected with music in some way; these days, they just grab any old random celebrity and get them to present it.  No wonder it's lost its' appeal.
Plus, the worst thing they could've done was rip off the CD:UK format. The minute they did that, the game was up. Remember the days when you'd watch til the end and you'd hear 'Prince's exclusive new video next week'? Or some other major star?  Even they don't seem to bother anymore. Maybe it is time to put it to bed.
And Muirdo, you're right. I have many memories of sitting around the tv as a kid, watching TOTP. And, yeah, most households must have a Dad that shouts abuse at it.  In my case, it was usually Jimmy Somerville or anyone with a falsetto.

Also, I think the BBC just didnt think it was financially viable enough 2 keep it going!! Theres not any really big name acts anymore 2 appear on it, as was the case years ago!! Back in its hey day, during the 70s and 80s really huge mega acts used 2 appear on it(including Prince), but now there just isnt the same calibre of acts 2 appear on it in order 2 make it financially worthwhile airing the show!! For the most part now, music acts of 2day just send along their latest video 2 TOTP 2 get aired!!
Yes, its true that VH1, MTV, and all the other 24/7 music channels have taken its place, also in the advent of the internet with downloading, nobody now watches TOTP 2 get the latest new single from their favourite artists anymore like they used 2!!! R.I.P. TOTP!! | |

Yeah but it has changed 2 much in recent years...I remember when I used 2 love watching all the latest bands making they're debut, seems to me its lost its place as "TOP" I think that for a few years all we were getting was a load of old muck like "Barbie doll" and " Aqua" I think for a few years this is all the country was producing and the programme lost its following. It became more a kids programme.  hold on 2 your soul y'all, we got a long way 2 go
