okay, movie junkies and dvd collectors...

my new obsession...

switchdiscs.com

it totally rules! have a dvd you don't want any more? list it as being for trade, someone will take it, you mail it to them, and then they give you switchbucs for it, which you can then use to get dvds you want from other people on the site.

anyone else a member yet? it totally rules.

Pick up a DVD burner. Best thing I ever bought in a long time. Any time I rent a movie and want to keep a copy for myself I just burn it. Also, there's tons of movies available for download on the torrent networks.

have thoguht about doing that too, but assumed most dvds would be written in a way that keeps them from being copied... how do you get around that?

I'm pretty certain most of the DVD copy protection methods have already been thwarted. Usually if you disable AutoPlay within Windows XP, so it doens't automatically open any CDs/DVDs you put in, it will keep it from installing any of the hidden software that they use to prevent CD's and DVD's from being ripped to your computer.

I haven't tried to burn a newly released DVD in a while, most of the ones I did were older titles. But when I look on the torrent networks, I do see alot of newly released DVDs available on them, so I guess it can be done.

If you rip a DVD directly to your computer, then burn it back to another DVD, then yes, all the menu's and extras will be intact.

If you download a video from online, it's usually just the movie itself usually as an MPEG or AVI file, with no menu or extras. Though most DVD burning programs such as Nero Burning Rom, will allow you to split the video file up into chapters and create your own menus.
