There were so many scenes that I was fully laughing out loud. "Friggin' flies!" The super long scene where he goes apeshit in his closing remarks was hilarious. The premise and final outcome is too funny and the monotone narrator just made it funnier. I thought I was watching a 2 hour Saturday Night Live skit. I know it's a sad story and all but I still think it's a must see if you want a good laugh. [Edited 6/19/06 17:56pm]

Is it as good as Spanglish?
Maybe DOOK would like it.

Werner didn't help either. AND some of those interviews!!! He didn't think those were bears out there, he thought those were people in bear suits. imo, he got what he deserved. Timothy was a character who happened to be out of his GOTTDAMN MIND!!!

i wish they would've played the tape. you know Werner wanted to put that in, but Timothy's friend wouldn't let him.

I saw it on Bravo(??) I think. I can't remember. But it sort of haunted me. It was difficult to watch the guy's decline into madness and self-delusion.
I thought the last part with the director reading the transcripts of the tapes was chilling. See, I couldn't have listened to that tape. It would have been too difficult for me as an audience member.

You're probably right. It was so weird that Timothy was on talk shows--a celebrity for his love for animals. I guess no one realized that he was really suffering from a depression. If I remember correctly, I think Timothy mentioned that during the movie. Didn't he say that he quit taking meds or something like that, but he quit?? Grizzly Man was a great documentary/movie--a character study so to speak. But like I said, it haunted me for a while after I saw it. I've been affected by a few movies like that--Sophie's Choice, Leaving Las Vegas--to where I can't watch those films again. It's just too painful. Grizzly man is another one of those, and to think a REAL person--not an actor depicting someone fictional or not--is the subject of that movie. It was a very good movie though. I saw the trailer at another film I went to see a while back. Just for the scenery alone, it looks fantastic.

I know it's a sad story and all but I still think it's a must see if you want a good laugh. Somehow I don't think you do. Yeah, as disturbing as the movie was, I agree that Tim was so over-the-top funny at the same time. He was just a wildman-for lack of a better word. No, I was laughing a bit myself because he was too funny. I guess for me, during the course of the movie, the reality of the whole thing became dark...sad for him--those animals that he loved so much were ultimately wild animals. It was a matter of survival of the fittest, so he and his fiancee were among the weakest, ya know? Those animals couldn't have the same emotional attachment--concern for his well-being-- for him as he did for them. Ultimately it came down to the bears' survival. The irony is that he (and his fiancee) paid the ultimate sacrifice for that, but I don't think that is what he bargained for, ya know? This is off-topic, but when my rat terrior was a puppy, she would bolt out of our front door to chase squirrels. I had trained to come back to me when called. But one day she bolted-out--chasing this squirrel across the street. Luckily, no cars were around , but she still ignored my calls for her to come back. Finally, when the squirrel ran up the tree, my dog decided to respond to my call and bolted back towards our house. As she was crossing the street, she was NEARLY hit by a car. I told my vet about it, and also said that even though my dog was usually very obedient during our walks-I would sometimes let her off-leash- after that incident, I was afraid that one time she might not listen, and then get into some trouble. My vet responded, "Well, they are just animals. They don't realize that bad things might happen when they are following their own instincts." She went further to say, that even the most well-trained dogs have that one moment where they aren't always going to behave as they were trained. To this day, I don't let my dog off-leash anymore. Luckily, she has quit bolting out of the front door though. (After that incident, we put a front gate up, so she couldn't do that anymore, so she finally lost interest.) But as much as I love my pets, over the years,I have finally realized that they are just ANIMALS--not fully capable of the same feelings that we pet lovers so often give them credit for. Obviously, that's particular true of animals in the wild-- or those undomesticated animals by nature. So for me Grizzly Man was also a harsh reminder of that. Unfortunately, for Tim his depression or whatever didn't allow him to see that he was in danger anytime he entered the bears'territory--that he actually was just very lucky nothing had happened over the years--until finally his luck ran-out.

Haven't seen this yet, though I'd like to.
Did I hear that soemone -- after this film -- released either the video (without sound) or the audio (without pictures) of his and his cinematographer's final encounter with a grizzly? Has anyone else heard this? I think that's so intrusive. [Edited 6/20/06 5:38am] Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

WOW!! it had to be the audio without the video, the cap was still on the lens when the bear attacked. i know in the film Herzog told the woman who had possesion of it to destroy it because it would be a white elephant in her life. maybe she needed some cash. i do agree it is intrusive, but i have to admit, i'm really curious about it.

I wanted to see the movie until I heard it... I just don't think I can handle knowing who that man was after hearing how he came to his end. In spite of the cost of living, it's still popular. |
