Well since I live in Finland it was hard to escape those things at one time. There was even a great Muumi-fad in the 90s. The original children's bokks were a bit different, more edgy. And even a bit scary for the youngest children.

Then the Japanese corporate forces took them over and turned them into how they are known today across the world.
