Parents Appreciation Thread So what did you like about the way your parents raised you?
While there are definitely things that everyone didn't like about it, there have to be some, or many, good things, as well. Here are mine: They gave me lots of exposure to the arts. Museums, theater, concerts, you name it. They also encouraged all of my own creative endeavors. Humor. Both of my parents have a nice sarcastic, witty, and offbeat sense of humor that they passed down to me. Independence. While there are things that I don't like doing on my own, I definitely know how to get my ass in gear and get things done on my own. I'm also good at making choices because of this. Confidence. This is not to say that I am not sometimes uncomfortable in my own skin. Everyone is from time to time. But my parents really let me be me and let me define myself by my own terms and not by the rules of others Love love love love love. I've never doubted my parents' love for me. Also, through them I've learned a great deal of what goes into a loving, function relationship and what does not. Ok .org, your turn!

My Mum turned a blind eye to me nicking her fags out of her purse when I was 12.
Bless her! | |

Bless her! Maybe she actually was blind. No, I'm fairly sure her only disability was she had no legs.

both given me vast exposure to music. both are music freaks. my mother taught me to have an open mind about things and people, while my dad taught me how to not be so naive about people and things-so i'm at a middle ground. i'll give you a benefit of a doubt but i can still sense the bullshit . one thing i really love about them is that they've taught me that life is too short and to live my life to the fullest and not let anyone stand in my way.

That's so cool, brownsugar. It's nice when parents can balance out each other's views and give their kid the middle ground.

Ex-Moderator | I have my father's sense of humour and both my parent's appreciation for music.
I had a weird childhood and not much involvement or guidance from them. But I think I was so strong-willed myself I didn't really much want it from a pretty early age. |

My dad taught me everything I needed to know about responsibility....my parents divorced at a real early age for me and my dad kept custody of me and my three sisters instead of letting us be split up (2 with him in N.O., 2 with my mom in L.A.)....he worked 3 jobs til all hours....went without to give to us...his example did so much to help me raise my own kids.....I really don't know who I'd be without him..... He was like a cock who thought the sun had risen to hear him crow.
(George Eliot) the video for the above... http://www.youtube.com/wa...re=related
