My friend just came from Bangkok and bought me some of this stuff. Have you ever had any? Hell, has anyone ever tried this stuff before?



I got this from my Army buddies in Korea and don't remember shit for three days. Not trying to do that again. Bartenders, drunks, where are you all?

No, it won't kill you. Thais refer to Sang Som as whiskey but it is in fact rum. They drink it with either Coke, soda, Sprite or Red Bull. Sang Som with Red Bull is the mix of choice for the classic buckets people drink in Khao San Road where several people with straws simultaneously finish the bucket in one go.

It does get you pretty drunk and the hangovers can be harsh sometimes, but it won't kill you. Not something you'd want to drink too often though!

You see that big bottle - it costs $4.50 here, while the little ones cost about $2.50.

p.s. It's easy to find people on the internet claiming Sang Som contains amphetamine (they say the same about Beer Chang), but it's untrue. I think this persistent rumour comes from a now defunct whiskey or rum made by the same company (Sangthip?) having some rather dubious ingredients, as well as the fact that the tourists perpetuating the rumour probably drank way too much Sang Som mixed with Red Bull and didn't sleep for days after.

Probably. Beer Chang does. It's really not that bad if you take it easy. We often drink it when we have a family barbecue and in small quantities it's quite enjoyable and doesn't give you a hangover.

This is Sang Thip, which I believe they no longer produce. I've never had it.



I've never tried Maekhong rice whiskey either. Probably a good thing.




Note the label on the bottle says B50. 50 baht is $1.25.

To be honest, all the Thai brands are cheap. It's just the economy and how a currency conversion makes it look. There is Royal Thai Chaophrya whiskey, which I believe is supposed to be quite good, but I've never even seen a bottle of it, let alone tried it.

I'm currently feeling pretty rough from five 640 ml bottles of Beer Chang last night. Those suckers are less than a dollar each, so combined with being 6.4% alc. volume are a dangerously inexpensive tipple of an evening. Ugh!

Nope. It is suppose to make you hallucinate. Just look at Moulin Rouge. They have a seen in that movie where they are drinking it. A famous artist/poet drank the mess and cut his ear off or something. Edgar Allen Poe or Van Gogh, can't remember which.
