He's clever. He won't mix protein and carbohydrates. As to the children, you're the mother. YOU teach them how to eat healthily. If you let them choose you're lost forever no he's not! he wants me to make mashed potatoes even though the kids would rather die than eat that here's what I make for the kids: a bit of meat/chicken/fish, with steamed broccoli, carrot, corn, some cut up tomato. They like a little pasta or rice with it, if not a slice of wholemeal bread. This is what they will ask me for if I say what would they like for dinner. They eat very well, no crap.

I've been reading a lot about neurodevelopment, and one of the things I thought was interesting is that pretty much all tastes aside from sweet, salt, and fat have to be aquired. We evolved to be suspicious of foods that aren't obviously good for us, 'cause they might kill us. Sweet foods, especially, tend to be very safe.
Interestingly, though, the process of aquiring a fondness for a new taste can start in the womb and/or while breastfeeding. For example, if your mom ate garlic regularly while she was pregnant, you probably liked her milk better after she ate garlic, and you probably like it better as an adult. This happens in other species too. Basically, we start to learn what's safe to eat from our parents before we're even born. Cool, eh? [Edited 6/14/06 9:11am] oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

That's why we must teach our children to eat everything as our grandmothers did from an early age. We musn't let children choose. They don't know what's good or bad just what tastes good for them. Problem is today's young parents were the first generation to be spoiled so I'm very pessimistic about all this having a solution.

As one of todays young parents, I think I go overboard trying to give my kids what's good 4 them. It's actually my mom and in-laws sneaking them junk and soda. I think that since we were spoiled, we see the error in it and are trying to correct that in our children.

I'm glad to hear that And I don't think it's bad they have some coke if they understand that's an extra. Problem is when it becomes an everyday's habit. I see my sisters drinking coke and only coke at lunch and dinner.Guess what? Their children only want coke too Feel like slapping them, my sisters not the children

[Edited 6/14/06 9:11am] Cool & damn scary considering how so many adults are eating these days Fast Food moms-to-be, beware! For sure. Another thing that the book I'm currently reading mentions is that the link between alcoholic mothers and children may be partly due to developing a taste for alcohol in-utero. But, yeah, if you want to encourage your kids to like vegetables, you should eat a wide variety of them while pregnant and nursing. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

I've read that a child's sense of taste is much more acute than an adult's which would explain why children tend to be picky eaters.
