Last Saturday night

I went to the bar to see a band, only there was a private function there. It turned out to be a wake, except the guy wasn't even dead yet. They gave him stars named after him and had a Powerpoint slide show with photos of him and his kids. I didn't know him and I was crying my eyes out. A couple of people gave speeches and they spoke as if he had already died sad .
The day after he was starting chemo. I don't think he was expected to live from the sounds of it.
It was the weirdest thing I've ever seen.

I had to stay and see my husband's band. neutral it sure kicked the evening off with a weird vibe. But all the people there were having fun and dancing the night away, even the dying guy.

It sounds like an office party gone very wrong, "I know, (the boss) lets give smith a send off, its not as if he's gonna live is it? naaah, bugger that, lets give him a wake now."

it was very much an office send-off. This place, more a pool hall than a bar, was next door to where he worked, and he was always there lunchtimes. All his workmates were there, sharing their fondest memories and stuff. They even had a pig on a spit.

than again, it probably is a good way of communicating with people about
your oncoming death to have the wake with you there. and make it into an
office party kind of affair. that way people can acknowledge that you're
ill and probably going to die but still be cool about it, talk about it,
to you and others. instead of trying to act like nothing's wrong.

on the level of communication and psychology it is a very good/cool thing
that they did.

but it's still weird

former US President Ronald Reagan held a party for all his friends and family shortly after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. It was sort of like a living funeral because he knew that soon, he wouldn't remember who any of them were.

It came true, too. After a while he didn't even know who his wife was. And they didn't ever tell him that his daughter had died because he didn't know her, either.
