i'm kind of a closet pride grinch. i think it's great for other people who need to identify with something really public that acknowledges the community, but i've never really "connected" with it other than going with people i know and enjoying their company.

i will say the moms with their "proud parent of a gay child" always get me choked up, every year. nod

Actually, PFLAG is always my fave part of the parade, for that same reason. giggle

Totally. I heart PFLAG.

Back then they weren't so political, just plain fun.

No, I am not gay, I supported my friends.

It was a few years ago. I just got embarrassingly drunk. Hot afternoon sun, too much alcohol, yadda yadda yadda, almost got kicked outta the block party but my friends were getting me out and into a cab to get me back home. There's a bit more, but I think that's all I'm gonna share. redface
Lucky for me, another friend ended up getting arrested that night so I got outta being the talk of the town after that one. giggle

Thanks for sharing darling. My only embarrassing moment at a Gay Pride was a very long time ago. It was the only time I've ever blacked out. My ex said that I was funny. I was up there testifying with this drag queen. She was talking about cheatin' men and I was saying stuff like "Uh-huh, tell it like it is."
lol I don't remember a thing.

Happy Pride Season everyone... Pride update from Huff...

I did Long Beach Pride on May 21-22 with the Los Angeles boys of Leather. Had a blast but my only complaint was that the LALC was seperate so all the Leather groups were spread apart.

I just got back from 9 days with the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence in LA we had our Conclave this year there and ended it with the Pride Parade yesterday. It was amazing to be around 150 like minded people who take the Calling just as serious as I do. I met one of the founding Sisters... who started the Order in 1979. It was moving and touching and a great week. Made LA Pride that much more fun for me.

SD Pride is coming up and they are banning the entry of anyone under the age of 18 to the Festival. Last year we had a big scandel caused by a wacko exgay who found 4 voulunteers on the Megan's Law List and to prevent that from happening again they are no longer allowing youth into the festival.

They can go as long as they r accompanied by an adult or parental guardian, which is also ridiculous.

change is afoot. The editor of XY magazine has contacted the SD Pride board demanding they drop the policy or they will publish articles against SD Pride along with Advocate, Frontiers, the NY Times and contact sponsors and lead a boycott against SD Pride. Which I will be participating in as well.

the youth groups at the LGBT organizations i've worked at have had licensed youth counsellors as leaders, and for the purposes of the groups they were considered "guardians". how is this not possible for SD?

it is possible this is a knee jerk reaction to a controversy from last year. instead of paying hte money to screen volunteers they have decided they'd rather just ban youth from attending.

rolleyes

such a typical reaction. Instead of thoughtfully addressing a problem, let's just BAN it.

I mean, that kinda mindset works in situations like Althom. But for other issues, we should be more thoughtful. nod

i don't like the idea of "let the kids march or we'll say mean things about pride". i DO like the idea of contacting other cities' youth groups and seeing how they handle things. you (or whomever is advocating) should call HORIZONS in chicago or THE CENTER in nyc and talk to the youth group program heads. i bet you'll find a solution involving less dischord and mudslinging.

i've been working with or for or against Pride for the past two months. We have done presentations about the harm this is doing youth. we have offered new ideas. we have asked them to contact other fairs in SD County we've asked them to contact other prides...each time they tell us they are not interested in changing the policy.

they might tell you that, but would they tell a member of the board of trustees from another community organization that, in so many words? is this what they'd tell ADVOCATE or OUT? you should contact verna eggleston's people at the hetrick martin institute, if she's still there. i'm sure she is. if not, whoever is the ED or whomever is on the board who you can contact.

We've sent letters to InterPride, Several Prides across the country, Gay and Lesbian Times, Advocate, XY, Out, Genre, NY Times, CAPI, and a few others. XY and Advocate have contacted SDPride and told them to drop the Policy or they will be running stories aboute SDPride and calling for a national baycott of SDPride. the editor is also contacting the sponsors of SDPride asking them to drop support if the policy isn't dropped. Interpride is also considering revoking their Pride charter if the policy isn't changed.
