He can't help it, he lives in dirty conditions. A roach probably got indigestion from eating too much of the gel in his hair and fell into his computer, thus being transformed into Imago's new avatar.

My Grandmother had a neighbor named Mrs. Roach...when I was a little kid, the poor lady grossed me out just because of her name.
She was probably a really nice person....
