I was just thinking.. ANTM hair.

On Americas Next Top Model, everytime the models get their hair cut off, they start balling their eyes out as if it's the worst thing that has ever happened to them. Is it really that traumatic...what do they think being a model is?

After all, a models job is to be adaptable and convey different looks, to be malleable.

so why the tears and tantrums.

If you were a contestant, would you cry as the hairdresser snipped your hair off?

Fear of change, vanity, self-consciousness... all sorts of stuff I guess.
Now, I'm someone who has cut all my hair off at once before. And I found it very freeing and it dramatically changed my outlook for a short time.
But if all of a sudden someone told me I had to do my hair the way they said I had to, I might have a bit of a problem with it. hmmm

I understand, but in the context of being a model, its just that they always look so shocked, isnt is something that comes as part of the job though?

actually she is probably whispering to the production assistant, but loud enough for the poor girl to hear "Oh my, that looks awful"

I remember one girl, I dont remember her name, anyway Tyra was trying to acheive this Mia Farrow haircut on her and short hair really suited this girl but she hated it and dropped out of the show entirely.

I think her name was Cassandra.

Yeah, I suppose that's right. And I agree.
But these girls are just learning how to be a model. Chances are they've gotten by on their looks all their life, or at the least have gotten used to them and it's a scary thing, that much change. The make up and clothes may not be them, they can always be taken off and they go back to how they know themselves, but hair is something some folks get weirdly attached to.

Myself included. boxed

They are naive and still learning, but it just seems like they've started a new job at Macdonalds for instance and are horrified to learn that they have to flip burgers.

sorry, crap analogy, but you know what I mean.

yep, she left.

Cassandra Whitehead was a contestant in the fifth cycle of America's Next Top Model from Houston, Texas. She was known as the beauty pageant queen from Texas who at one point compared her personality to that of a sociopath, as many of the other girls found her robot-like behavior odd. During the makeover episode she was told that her long, dark locks would be cut extremely short and dyed blonde, similar to Mia Farrow in the film Rosemary's Baby. It was difficult for her to accept this transformation and was the first time she had shown any sort of emotion on the show, although she did eventually go through with the cut. Unfortunately, at the next judging panel Tyra Banks was not happy with the makeover, saying it was not the cut she had requested and wanted it shorter. On the set of the next photoshoot she was asked to have it cut shorter or else she would be forced to quit. She refused to get it cut insisting that they were trying to change who she was, and as a result was the first contestant ever on the show to leave out of will. She had hair extensions put in, and is now interning at a UPN affiliate.

She was one crazy bee-yatch. nod

Personally, I thought the cut didn't suit her (it accentuated the size of her nose). But you'll be happy to know that Tyra tries the "Mia" again in the following cycle, this time to great effect w/Mollie Sue:

They also gave Sara a wicked cut,but she was too fucking square to realize it rolleyes:

I DO understand that it may be traumatic. Some people are very attached to their hair (no pun intended). BUT, if I was on a show, competing, I would do absolutely everything they said, barring anything where I will get hurt, and not bitch about it.

The haircut looks great in the first picture, nod I think very short hair can look fantastic on some women.

I can understand if they want you to pose in ways that make you uncomfortable, but getting your hair cut isnt that big a deal for a model.

These girls who fucking moan when they change their hair don't have a clue what the industry is like; they're almost as out-to-lunch as the homophobic contestants (yes, you never deal with any gay people in the fashion industry evillol). If I'm hiring you and I want to paint your hair pink with yellow polka dots, you'll do it or I'll hire somebody else. What part of "They're going to fuck with your hair" do they not understand? clueless
