I'm 1/4 Japanese....

...when does someone cease to be a minority? Is it 100%? Is it half? Is it 25%?

I don't know... do you get to mark any minority boxes when applying to college, etc? I never have, but maybe I should? confuse

good question. I wonder if the one-drop-rule applies here - or just how you categorize yourself? if you THINK you are a minority, then you ARE a minority? confuse

mad i HATE stupid race boxes, unless they have a decline to state option. hate hate hate. it's like, okay, do i just check white or what?

There's a really good internship in the field I'm interested in, but it's explicitly stated that it's a "multicultural undergraduate summer internship" for "individuals of African American, Asian, Latino/Hispanic, Native American, and Pacific Islander descent." I can't decide whether or not to apply, because I don't know if I'm multicultural enough. err So frustrating.

You should TOTALLY apply! If you have a little of any of the ethnicities you listed, you should be able to qualify! nod

it's a good idea to check them when they do the census, though. nod

I check the appropriate one if I feel like it. it's not like they can't tell by my ultra Japanese last name anyway. lol

I'm going to next year, I guess...it's just that the application essay requires you to write about how your multiculturalness has affected your life...meh. shrug

Our society reaps what it sows.

For centuries, in America at least, racial classifications were codified in state law. Anti-miscegenation laws were on the books. Our laws and sciences defined race as a biological characteristic and legal concept. And people suffered for it, to say the very least.

We're evolving away from that concept, albeit fairly slowly. This is because were enshrined in our laws.

I'm 1/16 Chinese. All of my cousins from my mother's side are (and there are lots). We joke about China being our 'motherland'.
