Bollocks. That's us out then. I thought we played well considering we had to get by with only 10 men for an hour. Hargreaves was excellent and it was a good effort by all the lads. Our penalties were all pretty poor though, even the one that went in. Portugal played ok, but considering their advantage they didn't put as much pressure on as they might have. Ronaldo was diving all over the place, as usual, and typically irritating in his encouraging the ref to produce cards. There's no way we had enough to win this tournament considering the way we've played, but based on that performance I can't see Portugal going any further.

On to euro 2008 neutral

bawl bawl bawl bawl

i just got home, and watched the match. i knew the outcome already.... but had to see it for myself. i have to say that i think england played a good game... and portugal was annoying the hell out of me for all those stupid dives they were taking!! and ronaldo up in the ref's face which resulted in rooney getting a red card (when on the replay it doesn't look that bad, but more like the player got clipped a little and "sold it".... though i guess only he will ever know for sure...)

even my sister, who is not even a fan of football, much less england, was watching the game with me and was getting disgusted and portugal's "babyishness" as she put it.... crying at every little thing, trying to disrupt the play.

i haven't watched the penalties yet. i had my timer set and didn't think to set it for the possibility of extra time and penalties. so my neighbor tivo'd it and is going to record it so i can watch it. (one of the perks of living next to a college soccer coach....he already tivos all the games! biggrin )

i'm so bummed. sad

Maybe Rooney got the red card because he kicked the other guy in the balls. Maybe not the smartest idea, especially when the referee is 1 m away and it's basically a fight for nothing...

I think it was a red card, however players have got yellows for much worse, including Figo for headbutting somebody. Being surrounded by Portuguese players insisting Rooney get a red certainly doesn't help the referee make an impartial decision and is in itself ungentlemanly conduct and worthy of yellow cards!

Rooney hardly 'kicked' the other guy deliberately in the balls, it was a tiny backwards movement of his foot and Rooney had no way of telling where he might strike. Of course it was stupid and not the right thing to do and rightly got sent off for it, but let's not exaggerate what happened. If I was to kick a guy in the balls, I'd hardly turn around and move my leg back in the vane hope of hitting the spot! It was merely a kick-back that happened to hit where it did.

On another thing, I've noticed a lot of teams using a cheating tactic this world cup - when they attack in numbers and then lose the ball, there is always the chance for the opposing team to counter-attack. Well, I've seen many many players lose the ball, then go down in a crumpled heap as though they are seriously injured, which results in the counter-attacking team having to kick the ball out of play thereby ruining their attacking advantage. Then miraculously, the injured player gets up and turns out to be okay! I've seen it time and again this world cup, it's cheating as much as diving and should result in yellow cards the same way.

Rooney was fouled 10 seconds before he kicked the guy in the bollox. If he had done what the Portugese had done throughout and went to ground holding his face when the first tackle went in, the red card incident wouldnt have happened...

As sad as it has become, England need to start playing like the other countries (even Henry has resorted to it)... they need to start screaming out loud and rolling over whilst clutching their [insert body part] to win free kicks and get opposition players booked... Honest, fair play is clearly being stamped out by FIFA... Where are the yellow cards for diving? Where are the yellow cards for players demanding the ref show a card? Nowhere. instead, cards have been dished out left right and centre for harmless tackles because players have acted like theyve just been shot in the leg... And because of FIFA's insistence on cards coming out at every opportunity, the divers have taken control of the game.

Thats not to say Rooney didnt deserve the red card - he did. But if he went to ground at the initial challenge like every single other nationality would have done, we wouldnt be talking about it now and England could possibly be in the semi-final.

Having said that, if that prick Ericsson had taken the right strikers and played the right formation then Rooney wouldnt have been up there on his own getting more and more frustrated. It was a sin that Defoe and Bent had to watch this attrocity from their living rooms and not be in the thick of it.

Good riddance Sven, thanks for nothing...

England lost as always, they are simply not there with the best (once again as always...). OK they were unlucky, but they have not played a single great match in this world cup even though they faced none of the best...

By contrast the french were a bit pathetic during the first round but they suceeded in bringing their game to amazing levels when it was really needed. Zidane is a genius, the greatest football player since Maradona!

how in the world could rooney have deserved that red card?? he had TWO portuguese on him, and the guy was behind him.... IF it was as bad as the player made it look then yeah, that was definitely a yellow card at the most... but how can he be sent off when it was clearly not deliberate.... how could the ref determine that it was an intentionally hazardous act? he was stepping his foot down and couldn't even see the guy was there!! not like he was sliding in for a tackle with feet up looking to hurt the guy....

i think the whole thing is a disgrace, and i hope manchester united gets rid of ronaldo... he doesn't deserve to play in england anymore. hmph!

During the second group game, a free-kick decision went against them and they threatened to go home with the ball.

At 1st there's the match against Italy tonight!

And although the German team has never ever lost in the "Westfalenstadion" of Dortmund and sold out the crowd there is notorious, kind of the capital of soccer Germany, they have never won against Italy at a World Cup.
What's still remembered is the "mother of all matches" as it is called in both of the countries, the semi finale of the World Cup 1970 in Mexico:
Italy - Germany (1:0/1:1-equalizer shot in the very last minute-) 4:3 after extra time

And the match of the Euro 1996 in England where Klinsmann, Bierhoff and Koepke all took part and that ended 0:0, which meant that Italy was eliminated and Germany & Czech Republic were hitting the last 8.

I don't think the Frings-thingie is so important for the German team and Klinsmann/Loew.

I just don't hope it gets too aggressive... (see Italy - U.S.A.)

no, there's not! Soccer-players are like superstars over here, they make a lot of money and get a lot of attention. Every now and then there is some girl who claims she's been raped.....investigations will start, in the end (after their 15 minutes of fame) these girls will revoke their accusations.....it's pathetic. I Haven't heard of a scandal around the players Stinky mentioned. The racism-claim is ridiculous. These guys are professional sportsmen, there is too much on stake....
