What was that last goal from Sweden!! Sven took a bung, Ashley Cole was arse tonight. Our defence (debatably the best in the world) was all over the place!!

We would get creamed by any team worthy of the last 16.

However, first half - we was on fire!!!

Still excited

That second goal almost went in entirely untouched from a throw-in - can you actually score when you've just thrown a ball into the net? Hmmmm...

Christ, Owen's probably out and not playing well even if he is due to lack of games, Crouch has only one skill - being tall, Wallcott clearly isn't good enough as a striker otherwise Sven would have played him, and Rooney hasn't played enough games to be sharp yet - geez, our attacking options are crap. Thank god for Joe Cole, he's been playing some blinders recently.

Got to hand it to Sweden, their crosses into the are were fantastic and better than Beckham's for us. Didn't help our defense panicked. Quite what the point is of booting it upfield where non of our players are just so it comes straight back, I don't know, if I was manager I'd insist on 2 players staying up and have confidence the other 9 men can defend well enough - they just get in each other's way in the penalty area anyway.

I can see England beating Ecuador - just, but can't see them going further than that.

The English were lucky though, we totally dominated the second half and should have won the match.

Absolutely - plain as plain can be that Larsson scored the goal.

On the hypothetical question though - no, you cannot score by throwing the ball into the net directly, without anyone touching it.

If the attacking team throw the ball into the net, it is a goal kick. If the defending team throw the ball into the net, it is a corner kick. (fifa and the FA in the UK are clear on this).

I think if we can play like we did in the first half for the whole game, and tidy up our defending on set pieces (which is pretty easy to remedy, as Big Sam pointed out), we can still do very well in this tournament. Certain players need to raise their game. Notably Beckham and Lampard. We need Neville back (Carragher, bless his cotton socks, just isn't a right back), and we need John Terry not to make any more uncharacteristic mistakes, and for Robinson to take command of his six-yard box a bit more readily.

Ecuador will be an important game. This is the serious part of the tournament now. As well as winning, it will be crucial not to pick up any more injuries, and if possible to avoid picking up any yellow cards.

I never said it went in untouched, I said it almost went in untouched, Larsson barely touched it, if he hadn't then I guess from your info it wouldn't have been allowed!

I agree all those things need to be fixed, but really, at this stage of the competition those things should have been fixed long ago, the stronger teams are simply not having the same issues. Put it this way, you never feel with England that they are definately going to win, you just hope they can win, whereas if I was a supporter of Brazil or Argentina I'd be way more confident of my team's abiliities!

Well, I think that last paragraph is just wrong (excepting Argentina). If you were a supporter of Brazil I think you would (or should) be more wary than you suggest. Ronaldhino is playing below par, Ronaldo is a shadow of his former self, Adriano has looked very stodgy and slow at times, your two wing backs are aging and past their prime, you have a keeper who is generally accepted to be one of the worst in terms of ability among the teams with a realistic chance at the world cup...

And yet people know that they can pull it round. Spain showed significant defensive frailties in their game against Tunisia, and yet many consider them one of the favourites. Spain against Brazil in the quarter final? Who do you bet on. The so-called form team (Spain) or the pre-tournament favourites who have yet to snap into action?

Let's look at the other stronger teams. Italy - a very suspect performance against the USA, after an excellent start. France - they'll be lucky to progress. Portugal? Not convincing against Angola or Iran. Germany? Another 'form' team, but you wouldn't have thought so after their defensive errors in their first game against Costa Rica. They totally failed to play the back line / offside properly, and it cost them 2 soft goals. What did they do after the game? They sorted the issue out, - just like England need to do with defending set pieces. And Germany succeeded. That is a perfect example of a team which has remedied a defensive problem after a game. Just like England need to do.

The only teams which look like they are the finished article at the moment are Argentina and Holland (and possibly Germany since they sorted out their defensive liabilities). Other teams will look stronger and stronger as the rounds progress, and injuries and suspensions start to kick in. Brazil will probably be one of them. There's a great chance that England will be one of them too.

I am loving this world cup.

It's open in terms of the teams that have a chance, it's had a couple of upsets, it has produced a far higher percentage of goals from outside the box...just wonderful. The number of free kicks being awarded is frustrating, as is the somewhat inconsistent application of FIFA's new guidance on yellow and red card offenses. I've been lucky enough to watch every minute of every game so far, thanks to my impending change of jobs. Essentially, I have nothing to do all day but watch footie! woot!

That's kinda the point I was trying to make. Start of every tournament I can think of Brazil is criticized for defensive frailties, Germany has a weaker side than normal, blah blah, but these teams even with these apparent weaknesses always seem to do well reaching the last 4 or 2 without a lot of stress.

Whereas England start every tournament with everyone saying what a great team and chance they've got, then inevitably every game we barely scrape by on a sub-par performance, lots of stress for the fans, the pundits say, oh, next game we'll surely show what we're capable of, but they don't and we get knocked out in the last 16 or 8.

Fans know from experience that Brazil, Germany etc can pull it round. With England, we don't know that because we never have.

That's a very fair point, well made. As Lehmann said about us pre-tournament, we aren't historically a team that has coped well with tournaments, even when we've been one of the better teams.

Although we turned it around in 1990 after a terrible start (2nd in group, ended up in the semis and could easily have gone all the way). And of course in 1966, when we were booed off the park after the first game of the tournament (a useless nil-all draw against uruguay).

Oh man…

It is shame that Angola hasn’t made it to the next round. cry It could have been a huge moral boost for a country which has just come out of a 30 year civil war…

My bets are on Argentina: they are playing such a damn good football.. and my heart goes to Spain, where I come from. biggrin We are not doing bad at all and I am sure we will do better than at previous competitions. Normally we are just lousy at this kind of events…

Germany, oh well, although I have lived here for a couple of years, I can’t identify myself with this country, so it leaves me quite cold if my host country wins or not… bored

My lasting memory of that campaign is missing seeing the semi-final against Germany. Why? Because I was at my first ever Prince concert that night at Wembley Arena! Great timing or what?! I went from the high of seeing Prince to the low of finding out from the staff that we'd lost after the gig. I recall 'fans' went on a rampage over-turning German cars...

Thats true biggrin , but then that was never on the cards. I was just hoping for a thrilling match, it was great technically, but a bit dull. Too much B team selection to preserve yellow cardd players.

Now!! If you beat Portugal and we beat Ecuador - England V Holland quarter final!! woot!

I'd be happy to get beaten by the Dutch (well, not happy, but if I had to pick) and i would support them all the way to victory afterwards too. Of all the teams I think they probably deserve the win on purely historical grounds.
