I learned that in Aussie land winking at women, even to express friendship, is considered bad manners in Australia. Is that true?

i think it is laid back here, if someone winked at 2 me id just laugh or smile , when it happened very recently I just smiled.

Perhaps. I don't have an unrealistically fond view of all Australian men, but it is certainly a lot more polite here than in the US at times (though being general doesn't really work come to think of it).

I will say that my US girlfriend is used to gross and stupid guys calling out to her all the time... but in Australia she feels it is more polite and has never had that experience... in fact in a crowded place, people might laugh at you or think you're crazy for showing unwarranted affection at someone... though I must say it can happen here or anywhere just the same... especially in pubs, etc...we have a lot of rude drunks for sure... just the same as anywhere else but generally not on the street in broad daylight as in the US perhaps.
