I think wav.

Wav files aren't compressed.

Lossless and lossy are the terms. Lossy files are .mp3s, .wma, etc. Audio info is lost with these formats.

.Ape and .FLAC are the two top lossless compression schemes. .Ape files are smaller. Both are much smaller than .wav files.

So I need help here. Someone tell me definitively: why should/shouldn't I buy an iPod 30GB? neutral

If you've been saving for it, then buy it! It's one thing if you are hurting for money or if you need to be saving it for something serious but where mp3 players are concerned there's nothing better than the iPod, imo. It plays mp3 & mp4 files, it plays uncompressed audio, it plays compressed lossless audio and now it plays video too. I don't think there are any other players that do all that and, also, work easily and simply with software like iTunes. On top of that it's compatible with the most popular internet music store (and the one with the least restrictive DRM of the main online stores). At this point in time, it can't be beat. biggrin

It does? I knew it played WAV, but does it also play APE and/or FLAC?

No, it uses ALE in an mp4 wrapper. If you happen to have ape or flac files then there are plenty of converters available.

Also, at least on the Mac, iTunes supports most audio plug-ins that work under Quicktime so you can use iTunes itself to do the converting in some cases.

i have a 30gb black ipod video and i LOVE it!! absolutely love it!! i always have it with me. when i missed an episode of LOST i just downloaded it for $2 and watched it the next day on my ipod. and the video quality is excellent. videos do take a lot of battery, especially watching an entire TV show. but, that's what chargers are for, right? biggrin i also love the video podcasts available (for free!!) on itunes. my favorite is StrongBad Emails.... if you've never heard of homestarrunner.com you have to check it out! hilarious!! lol

so anyways, i would say BUY IT!! if you've saved for it then get it.
