lol - I wrote a whole rant, but it didn't show up - I'll write it again, since it now seems like a joke without the punchline...

Aargh, now it won't let me even edit the first message (nothing to edit, it says)...

OK, here it is here instead:

I've ripped almost all my music collection to iTunes, catalogued it all (most with artwork), and I keep thinking how great it will be to have it all on an iPod (for the last 3 years I've been using an MP3 CD player, which is great but bulky - I've never had an MP3 player). I've been saving money for the last few months specifically to buy an iPod(in a savings account, no less) - something I haven't done since I was a kid.

I'm now in my daily routine of sitting at work, looking for the cheapest price online, deciding between 30GB and 60GB, deciding 30GB is enough, deciding between white and black, going for white, sometimes even choosing an engraving, putting it in my shopping cart, getting to the payment page... and then something in me stalls. I think "do I really need this? Surely there are better things I could spend $299 on...", so I close the window and tell myself I'll think about it.

Then the next day, the exact same thing happens over again. I feel like I'm in a Samuel Beckett play. Why can't I just put down the money and buy the thing?

So I need help here. Someone tell me definitively: why should/shouldn't I buy an iPod 30GB? neutral

Does that mean I should? Or are you just letting me know I have company in my analysis paralysis?

FYI, the video feature on the Ipod is overrated. I never use it because it absolutely destroys the battery life. So, I wouldn't even consider one of those unless you can get it for a great price.

get a creative labs NOMAD instead. they're cheaper and they break down less often. of course, they don't look like iPods, so you lose trendy points. confused

What file formats do they play? (I could look this up, but it's more fun to hear it from you smile)

well, they don't play video...unless there's a new nomad on the market.

the only file i can't get to upload directly is iTunes files (shocking, i know). i have to burn iTunes files to a CD, then upload 'em to the nomad from the disc.

other than that, i've had no problem playing audio files downloaded from anywhere else.

sometimes plunking money down isn't the best thing you can do. I plunked down 350 dollars for a PSP and a game. I haven't used it. I wish I had my money back to plunk down on something else.

well, i haven't looked at mp3 players since i bought mine over a year ago, and then they had nomads up to 60gb...i saw some on eBay that were 80gb.

i have a 40gb nomad and i still haven't used all the memory yet, and i have almost 9,000 songs on it.

I love my iPod nano.
I mean, I *LOVE* it.

But I think for an upper end device, I may go with Sony or Creative, becuase with those devices, when you plug them into a large monitor or T.V. the resolution is great.

The IPod's resolution was designed strictly for veiwing on an IPod or small screen. So essentially, it's still just a pimped up Mp3 player--not a true mutli-media device like Creative's offerings. shrug

Yeah, it takes quite a bit to fill up a 60 gig. Pretty much every song on every studio cd that I like, plus assorted boots. I usually have about 5,000 songs at 192 bitrate and some videos.

another good thing about the creative nomad is that the files are more portable than with an iPod. there's no licensing nonsense to deal with, so you can do whatever you want with the music on your player and share it however you please.

it makes putting together a compilation CD a piece of cake for me now...all i need is my laptop and my nomad. nod
