Um..I just heard that the sewage system in Athens and Santorini is so bad, you're not allowed to flush toilet paper when using the "facilities", and instead have to deposit said paper in a canister next to the toilet.

Is this true...??

Plus you have to bring your own canister and carry it around with you.

I spent the summer on a Greek island back in the mid-80s, and this was indeed true at the time. I didn't realize it and fucked up my host family's plumbing. Maybe things have changed since then. But basically, in each home bathroom you had a toilet and a bidet (it was the first time I'd seen one of those, too) and you wiped and wrapped the used TP in clean TP and deposited it in a wastebasket next to the toilet. Also, each home bathroom had a window for ventilation that you could slide open and shut. You were supposed to close it when you were going, then open it when you were done.

Also, I recall it was HIGHLY recommended that you bring your own TP to certain public spots (especially outdoor carnivals, restaurants, etc.) because there was no guarantee that there would be any. If there was, it was much rougher.

On the flip side, I once shared a flat with a guy from Greece. Wasn't until the bin in the toilet needed emptied that we realised his error! We just thought he was a bit smelly!
