Chefs

Are there any famous female ones besides Nigella? Doesn't have to necessarily be someone on TV, etc. - just well known.

Okay you asked for it:

There has been great prejudice against women in the culinary world. For the longest time women weren't allowed to attend the culinary schools that were a prerequisite to being a world class chef. After those doors were forced open by a few brave women, they still couldn't find work in fine restaurants.
There were many debates about the reasons behinds this prejudicial treatment of women and none of them have any merit:
!. Women don't have the physical stamina for the work.
2. Women don't have the same capacity to determine taste as men do.
3. Women can only produce home cooking not haute cuisine.
4. Women are more interested in having children and homelife and don't want to put in the long hours required in a sucessful restaurant.
5. Women only work three weeks out of the month.

The few sucessful women chefs today have to put up with harrassment and resentment from many if not most of their co-workers. They have to be smarter, better , faster and take a lot more abuse to get half as far as the men.
It's still a boy's club in the kitchen.

This is my short answer, I could write a book about it. lol

lol I'm actually looking for role models for one of my nieces, who has expressed interest in being a chef when she grows up.

But, while we're on the subject: are there any that look like Elyse Sewell, PJ Harvey (circa Stories from the City) or Winona Ryder circa this era?:
