Is it wrong to ask a black stylist if they do white hair? One of my black friends once told me that not all black stylists do white hair and so when I moved to an area where the only salon was black owned with all black stylists, I asked the lady if they did white hair, she said yes and that was that. That was my salon for 2 years. I got the best haircuts there
But there is this black salon down the street from where I work and I wanted to get my hair cut and I walked in and the salon was empty and the guy was sitting in a lounge chair and I asked him if he did white hair and he gave me a really dirty look and said he didn't have an opening for 2 hours. Now I'm assuming the fact that the place was empty and he was lounging meant he didn't exactly have clients to tend to And I wondered if maybe he thought I was being a jerk by assuming he couldn't do white hair. So can the brothas and sistas help me out here? Am I not supposed to ask that question? My black friend said I did and the one place I asked it was no big deal and this time I feel like the guy felt offended. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Hell no. I used to get my fades in the blackest part of the ghetto. I walked in there and said "Yo, can you fade a white boys head?"
hahah, dude just laughed and then hooked it up right. I go there anytime I need a low cut now.

no, of course not. Some stylist only specialize in a particular type of hair. I've even had white stylist who weren't used to doing asian hair (our hair is notoriously straight, and tends to be thick and sticks up if too short).
Just don't ask the poor man to give you corn rows

honestly, I think it's prejudicial to assume a hairstylist can't style another race's hair. I would have just said, I'd like my hair styled, and let him/her decide if they can help you or not. I don't think you're racist, Supa...I just think that when we stop putting labels on people we'll start to all get along. Perhaps your friend was sincere in what he told you..and perhaps there are many hairstylists of color who aren't skilled in doing caucasian hair...still in all everyone is innocent til proven guilty, orrrrr....a good hairstylist can cut all types of hair

well the only reason I asked is because my friend who is black said I was supposed to I never would have asked otherwise. 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Its ok...Just go in and ask if u can get a cut.
I used to go to a "ghetto" salon and white people were in there all the time One young lady came in to get extensions. When I moved to Dallas I was looking for a stylist and many "white" salons said they couldnt do my hair. They could cut it but thats just about it. "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

See, I know lots of whit stylists cannot do black hair. I didn't know it would go the other way around until my friend said so 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

If you're kicking it out to one of those fleamarket style salons, it could very well be that the hair stylists they have recruited there won't be able to bust your head out a là Toni & Guy International. However, if your salon is say, located a collegiate area, your stylists will have acesss to and practice on a whole variety of heads. Then of course, the more upscale the venue of the salon they may have had access to every type of head under the sun black, white, green, EV'rybody! From what I understand having loved ones who have worked in every scenario imaginable from flea market to Frederick Fekkai, is that when you come through cosmotology school you initially learn your trade on caucasian hair...after you pass the state boards for your liscence, whether or not you continue working soley on caucasion hair, ethnic hair, or a variety of hair textures really depends on the location (and specialization) of the salon you're in...I think it's a safe bet that if the salon in question is in an area that has a mixed residential demographic, they can handle every type of hair imaginable. Also, because you're a man, you'll be easier to do by rote the way any hairstylist would have learned in school. Just to be on the courteous side, maybe you could try a few walk-ins at different salons, just simply asking (without the awkward racial thingy) something like: "Hi. I was wondering if you had a stylist here that might be able to take me on as a client. I'm just looking for someone who could (then fill in the blank with whatever the service it is you need)".... ...if they have any damn sense in their heads, they'll be able to give you a simple, professional, yes or no, with the most CURT of descriptions as to why they can't accomadate you, if it is they cannot accomadate you. Hope that helps:lol: and p.s., if you go in there sweet and cute like that with good manners, and you still can't get them to give you a curt, but polite and professional reply, then you don't need to be spending your money at the salon in question any damned way

Dude was being a dick, Supa. If you go back, see if there is another barber in there. A lot of beauticians don't like to work with caucasian hair because it takes a lot longer to style. You can do just about anything with our hair from straight to wavy. If any barber/stylist tells you no then they are lazy. Period. Don't trip. Just go to another spot if need be. Thats not true I went to a salon and my regular stylist was sick so the guy that was there said he would do it. I had highlights at the time. I went in to go back to my original color and get it flat ironed. He jacked me up. He tried to flat iron my hair while it was wet He didnt know what he was doing. I walked in with long healthy hair and walked out with a mullet. Honest! He apologized and said "Im sorry, its just that I havent worked with african american hair since school and even then I didnt do a good job Mo Fo tells me this AFTER he butchers me. But I blame myself,I should have walked out when he said,my stylist was out and that he would do it "Nobody makes me bleed my own blood...NOBODY!"

Nah, I don't see anything wrong w/ Supa asking - why sit in someone's chair & have them fuck you up? Plus the dude had an attitude, I would never put my head into someone's hands who was trippy from the start If I walked into an all White salon I'd certainly ask if they did African American hair. I wouldn't want them to muddle through & do their best - I'm paying for a service & I want it done RIGHT... It's one thing to have been trained to do all types of hair, quite another to be skilled & current (b/c it's what you do on a daily/weekly basis) on that type of hair My advice: find a barber shop where they're cool & not full of shit
