So now the area exists as a place where the bars are and where the gay pride parade is. And it is still a gayish neighborhood. But many have moved out.
There are plenty of straight people, such as me and Jess (notoriousj) living on Capitol Hill, Seattle's "gay neighborhood," but the Hill was never exclusively gay in the first place. It's also popular with young professionals (due to its proximity to downtown) and counterculture types. As far as housing goes, you can get a studio apartment that rents for a few hundred dollars per month, a mansion that sells for a few million, or something in between. Some developers are constructing yuppie-ish buildings with apartments or condominium units -- my building is probably Exhibit "A" -- but I haven't gotten the sense that anyone is being priced out of the neighborhood. I gather from the entries on here that its not entirely dead, but slowly getting there.
2 quick stories. I was waiting for this friend in a recording studio in Times Square around 1982. So I went to a porno theatre on 47st. Back then there were tons all in the area. So Im watcing "Devil in Miss Jones part2" which I bought on VHS years later. Im sittin there and some older man sits next to me. I didnt think anything of it. So then he starts bantering to me about the movie. Again, no big deal , just figured he was a movie talker. Then he starts movin his hand to my thigh, so I immediately pushed him away. Then silence.... So the MF does it again and I pushed it away more firmly. then he says to me "Can I play with it?" I disgustingly said NO and he goes "Then why are u in here? " So I said TO WATCH THE MOVIE. silence again... AGAIN THE MF tries to touch me , so I stor out of the seat and go to the front of the theatre. BIG MISTAKE. As soon as I sit down , some other scumbag barrels down the isle and sits next to me. I realize I ait gonna be able to watch this movie with out losing my male virginity. So I get up and about to leave to go down the stairs and some hood gives me a neck hold and I fall down the stairs. Out to the street and complain to some douchebag cop who has no interest in what I told him. Another time I went with 2 girls, and guys would see them and come close to us and start whackin and the girls would just laugh. Guys would be walking down the stairs jerkin it, so finally they were afraid someone would spray them so we had to leave. So the only time I could safely see a porno was when it played at a "regular" theatre, like the old 8th street playhouse or the Quad which is still there.

No, it amazes me how mixed it is, as far as housing/income. If you drive all the way down my street, you see everything from $450 studio rentals to those million dollar homes you mentioned. It's kinda cool. But, part of the thing is that Seattle is so far left of center that few straight people here would care whether they lived in a "gay" neighborhood or not, so at this point, it's just the largest/densest residential area in the city. Broadway is still pretty faggy, though. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!
