Anyone in the US still have any local
XXX theatres still operating?

There used to be alot in the NY outer boroughs. I know of only one left in brooklyn.

i live in a gay neighborhood, so we're always gonna have the pervy little bookshop with the movie booths. as for actual porno theatres, our local arthouse theater The Music Box occasionally plays 70s porn late on weekends, but it's more of a kitsch thing than a trenchcoat occasion. lol

I think Tampa has between 20 and 30 ??? shrug

lemme see

5 in Brandon/Riverview

and roughly 10 to 15 in the drew park area

and at least 5 to 10 scattered throughout the rest of the city.

I'm pretty sure we have more of them than strip clubs, and we have plenty of strip clubs. lol

Oh let me add, I believe 80% of them have the theatre/booth setup.

I worked at one that did not. It was more like an adult botique, not run by Joe Redner (who owns the vast majority of them here in Tampa and has run for mayer like very 4 years for several years lol ).

oh wait, and I forgot.

We have 2 or 3 gay ones.

And we have at least 10-15 japanese or Thai massage parlors.

And we have in the neighborhood of 5-10 "lingere modelling" places.

And I think we have 3 or 4 swingers clubs.

We also have these "suana/bathhouse things" were nasty shit probably goes down.

And we have a nudist camp where nasty shit never goes down, unless you like looking at old people.

And we have alot of republicans so all sorts of seedy shit goes on.

Plenty of porn 'shops' around. The last true 'theatres' I have seen in the last couple of years have been in NYC, Paris, Montreal, Copenhagen, Chicago, London. Not many theatres left in the US southeast. Even though they are seedy, watching the people that go in them is intriguing.....and kinda gross at the same time! I would think the seating gets a tad "sticky".

Pee-Wee Herman got popped in a porn theatre in Sarasota, Fl when I lived there -I think it is now a religious bookstore (no kidding!). lol

In San Fran, I am not sure of Theatre Houses. I don't think there are any. It's mostly book stores and things like that.

In Chicago, they still have the good ole Bijou theatre which is gay staple in the US.

There used to be one a long time ago. Very scary. It was called THE BURBANK theater. They got rid of that in the 90's.

At one point in 1998 I was living on the edge of Boston's "Combat Zone" (the designated adult entertainment area), and there was an adult movie theater in my apartment building. It had a separate entrance on the side of the building; the residential entrance made the place look pretty high-class. (That changed as soon as you got above the mezzanine surrounding the lobby; the apartments and upper hallways were absolutely nothing special and really could have used a renovation.)

I never went inside the theater, but as I recall, when I checked online earlier this year, the "Art Cinema" (I think that was the name) had disappeared. Even back in '98, the Combat Zone was a shadow of its former self -- the Registry of Motor Vehicles had even opened a branch there -- and I'm told that today there's virtually nothing left of it.

I always figured that the VCR pretty much killed off the adult theater industry. shrug

There are gay neighborhoods? lol I guess Dupont Circle is like that in DC, but I don't really think of it as a neighborhood.

And back to the point, there used to be porn theater near where I live(it was right next to a dinner theater). But it's closed down now. Porn should be watched at home, anyways. neutral

I think the best films that depict the rise and demise of the porn theatre are "Boogie Nights", and then the documentary " Behind Deep Throat" (ot maybe it's 'INSIDE Deep Throat', haha!. The first is the fantastic Paul Thomas Anderson odyssey of fictional porn star Dirk Diggler (played by Mark Whalberg), and the latter is a docmentary on how Linda Lovelace and the Deep Throat phenomenon brought porn to every cross section of America's movie houses; from the celebrity filled premiere in NY with Jackie O. and the Studio 54 set, to small towns in the midwest...and the eventual FBI probings that followed it's release and all sorts of Capitol Hill persecutions of everyone involved in the film...intriguing stuff, indeed eek !

Chicago's Mayor Daley Made sure that he "branded" CHicago's Boy's town with big ol ugly gold pylons that mark the area/street. Prior to that the "gay" neighborhood was a moving force that shifted neighborhoods based on bar placement as well as affordable housing.

WHat's funny is that a LOT of straight people live in the "gay" area because it got overpriced and pushed out many of the gay people living there. So now the area exists as a place where the bars are and where the gay pride parade is. And it is still a gayish neighborhood. But many have moved out.

There's two relatively close to me, Foster Theatre over in Youngstown Ohio, and The Garden Theatre over in Pittsburgh PA. I think they're fascinating as hell to go to, watching all the different kind of people that come in, and let their inhibitions down, and randomly hook up with eachother. It's really bizzare and surreal.

It's one of those look, but don't touch, things for me though. I can't bring myself to hook up with anyone in those places. They're a cesspool for STD's.

It's interesting how these kinds of places are allowed to operate. That can't be legal to allow people to have sex in a theatre like that. It seems like the cops just turn a blind eye to it and let it be.

I've always wanted to bring my camera into these places and do a Nan Goldin-ish series of images, of everyone in these places interacting with eachother. I don't think the people there would let me though, so I've always chickened out.
