How to edit mpegs?

Anyone know of some freeware to just do some simple editing of MPEG files? I have made mpeg files on my PC of stuff I recorded on my DVR, now I just want to edit out the commercials and unwanted parts of the shows.

Help please!!

I have never seen that on my PC Ariel. XP came preinstalled on my Sony VAIO. They have a program called "Movieshaker" that I am about to install from my Application Recovery Discs, I'm hoping that will do the trick. I mean, all I want to do is chop and delete parts of the file, nothing complicated or anything.

Looks like my computer came bundled with Adobe Premiere 6 LE, I think it will do what I need, now I'm going to see if I can figure it out.....

Premiere is one of the leading programs for video editing. Even though it's an LE version, I'm sure it can do more than a few things.

actually, I found the windows movie maker program, i had it all along. It's done just what I wanted. However, I've created a title shot, but I'd like to overlay it on the clip as it starts playing, you know, just like a music video, to show the artist and name of the song. Is there an easy way to do this?

All I ever did with it is edit something once, and fix the contrast. I'm pretty sure you can add a title, though I don't know how. If not, use the Premiere.

I just figured it out! This is kind of fun. I've had the 2004 Billboard Music Awards show as a file on this computer forever. I now cut the performances I wanted out, added an overlay title screen and made files of them. I rock!! headbang

Here's the first one I did, it's Green Day!

When editing video, I've used a combination of Windows Movie Maker and Adobe Premiere Pro. WMM to edit down clips, and APP to refine them and put them together. thumbs up!

It can look intimidating, but if you play around with it and try some of the options it really is pretty simple. thumbs up!
