As some of you know , last year, my old hair stylist Nicole got married to some guy in Handuras, and ended up moving there with him and his family. My new stylist, Jason, was a friend of hers that worked at Toni & Guy and agreed to take me on as a client. It was a strange experience having to adjust to another stylist, especially having had the same one for a few years.

But we quickly got used to each other. I’m a very quiet client—I don’t like to chat with my stylists. Rather, I depend on them to more or less make up my mind for me—to be my guide in all things follicle. I more or less just sit there passively while They’re cutting, massaging, brushing, shampooing, or blowdrying me—through all of it, I more or less sit quietly, sometimes even napping—so I’m an easy client. And I tip well.

But a few months ago (November to be exact), I told Jason that I would like to grow my hair longer. He gave me very good advise. He said that if I want to grow my hair longer, I needed to come in less often and my duration between visits needed to be extended at least by a few weeks (I was getting a trim every 3 weeks at that time).

Well, I took his advice. As a matter of fact, I haven’t been to the salon since November. Anyone who has seen my hair knows it takes a lot to make it look that faboo (term borrowed from CarrieMPLS, another hair enthusiast as well as thinking my balls are uber rad). Anyways, I never told Jason that I was going to take a break from the salon for a while—that I was going to find my inner follicle so to speak. So I’m feeling a bit of guilt about that.

But the worst thing happened tonight. I was at the gym on the treadmill warming up for my legs/shoulders routine, and goddamit if Jason did not walk through the door. I was completely mortified. Thank you JAYSUS my gym is large because for the next 45 minutes I found myself moving from corner to corner trying to avoid his line of sight. It felt like I was some kind of two dollar hooker trying to evade the law, or that I was a cheatin’ housewife trying to find a proper spot to fuck the shit out of her paramour. I simply couldn’t bring myself to walk up to him and say hello. It would have just felt sooooo awkward.

I’m so stressed out right now. What if he comes back to the gym? I mean, I’ve been going to this stupid gym for 3 years now and I’ve NEVER seen him or any hair stylist (to my knowledge) ever in there. I’m almost tempted to start going again just so if I run into him at the gym, I won’t have to sneak around and hide.

I mean, there are a lot of relationships that you need to respect, but the one with your stylist can be often quite sacred. Look, people, the state of Florida regulates policemen, lawyers, and all manner of professionals. They’ve even passed a stupid ass legislation that invades Doctor/patient confidentiality, but no legistlator in his right mind would dare come between a person and their hairstylist—that’s just how those trendy motherfuckers roll!

I think I’m going to go back to the salon. I think it’s time.
