You know, despite you saying you have no experience, you're obviously very smart, and there's always a chance you'll actually enjoy the job more than u think. Maybe not lol but you don't want to be considering the job based solely on the pay and coming into it thinking automatically that you're going to hate it.

I think you'd be great in any position. batting eyes

How else should I be considering the job?

(new position lyrics)

Well, I do think the pay rise, considering all that you've said, should be an important factor. You suggested this position will have more job security. That alone might be enough. But are you open to this job not being just a better paid pain the ass, but actually a decent move for your career? You said you hate marketing, but career-wise what kind of opportunities might it afford as opposed to your current position?

Well...it will make me more rounded and more marketable to other companies.

Sounds like a good move then. It's career building and needn't be forever if you hate it. You'll be adding another skill to your resume and showing your flexibility. I bet you're flexible. batting eyes

Personally I think you should do it at least as a temperary measure. Unless it really really cuases you emotional stress. but the security, especially in today's aweful corporate environment may prove to be too much to turn down.

Plus, it's a promotion. If you are approached by H.R. for a salary action, I believe you have the option of countering it for more money. They will then meet you in the middle. I managed a couple of grand extra just doing that. lol

But seriously, it may be your best option, and you can always look elsewhere.

Mike Alstott certainly wouldn't turn down a chance to coach Tampa bay.

do it. you can use the money, it's a chance to learn new skills, and it's a risk and a change, and those things are good. if you're not comfortable, can you let your HR person know and get moved back to your old position? can you maybe discuss a probationary period where you can go in for a month or two and then kinda see if you like it and if they like you in the new position? even if you can't, i say go for it. you're a smart cookie, you'll catch on. and it'll look good on a resume if you move on in the future.

nod go for it, Apples!

Think hard about it, marketing is not all it's cracked up to be. You have to have a certain attitude to work at it long term.

hey honey! Congrats on the offer. Maybe you should try writing the pros and cons for your current job and the promotion - see what adds up for ypu and what doesn't. Alos, is there room for growth in the new job?

Thanks! Where have you been?!!?
hug

I was thinking about the pro/con list...I don't think there's room to grow in the new job (at least where I work now) but, the director of marketing told me that it'll be good for my future because the experience would help me get a managment position someday.

it sounds like an excellent opportunity, and could prove very beneficial for future reference. give it a shot. if you're already taking to it and feeling comfortable, don't let fear of the unknown scare you! i think you'll probably do just fine cool

...and I don't know if I should take it.

Currently, I'm a Corporate Communications Officer for a huge health system (10,000 employees) in Detroit...lately we've fallen on hard times and had to lay some people off, including a marketing officer. Well, I was told I had to take over some of his duties (which has been a huge stress for me because I have no background in marketing) and I haven't gotten any more pay. So, basically, I've been doing half of his job and about 80 percent of my job. Today I was told that another one of the marketing officers is resigning and I was offered the position. I do hate marketing, but it's coming naturally to me...and I'd be doing only one person's job. Plus, I'd get a raise (how much I do not know at this point, but it could be several thousand a year.) I have to make up my mind by Monday.
I don't know what to do.
sigh

I'd say be safe and put your resume together. Start interviewing. Read your words..."I hate marketing, but it's coming naturally to me"...in essence you'ld be doing something well, but something you hate. Is the money increase worth not
enjoying what you do?....
