I was offered a promotion at work... ...and I don't know if I should take it.
Currently, I'm a Corporate Communications Officer for a huge health system (10,000 employees) in Detroit...lately we've fallen on hard times and had to lay some people off, including a marketing officer. Well, I was told I had to take over some of his duties (which has been a huge stress for me because I have no background in marketing) and I haven't gotten any more pay. So, basically, I've been doing half of his job and about 80 percent of my job. Today I was told that another one of the marketing officers is resigning and I was offered the position. I do hate marketing, but it's coming naturally to me...and I'd be doing only one person's job. Plus, I'd get a raise (how much I do not know at this point, but it could be several thousand a year.) I have to make up my mind by Monday. I don't know what to do.

I'd say go for it! But I suppose it all comes down to how much you like doing the job and where your current job is going to take you.

do it. you can use the money, it's a chance to learn new skills, and it's a risk and a change, and those things are good. if you're not comfortable, can you let your HR person know and get moved back to your old position? can you maybe discuss a probationary period where you can go in for a month or two and then kinda see if you like it and if they like you in the new position? even if you can't, i say go for it. you're a smart cookie, you'll catch on. and it'll look good on a resume if you move on in the future.

Normally, I'd say don't take a job you're gonna hate just for extra money.
But it sounds like your current job is kinda fucked, so. . . might as well take the money. oh noes, prince is gonna soo me!!1!

The second option. Sounds like things are a little uncertain so the pay rise is a good option.

I think so too. The job I'm in now is pretty much dead end and it's hard for me to tell if I'll like the marketing job because I don't know exactly what my duties will be yet and I haven't done JUST marketing...only the hybrid work I've been doing for the past few months.

That is true...also, the marketing officers are pretty much untouchable right now because they help drive business.

Maybe u wont be so stressed out and u'll get a raise I hope so...I want to find out about how much of a raise I'll get. I don't know if they'll consider my past job experience in this position because I really have no past marketing experience. [Edited 5/18/06 19:36pm]

I agree with the previous comments to take the promotion.
All things considered, it sounds like the best course of action - and a raise is always wonderful. Congratulations to you!!

hey honey! Congrats on the offer. Maybe you should try writing the pros and cons for your current job and the promotion - see what adds up for ypu and what doesn't. Alos, is there room for growth in the new job?

Thanks! Where have you been?!!? I was thinking about the pro/con list...I don't think there's room to grow in the new job (at least where I work now) but, the director of marketing told me that it'll be good for my future because the experience would help me get a managment position someday.

[Edited 5/18/06 19:36pm] You know, despite you saying you have no experience, you're obviously very smart, and there's always a chance you'll actually enjoy the job more than u think. Maybe not but you don't want to be considering the job based solely on the pay and coming into it thinking automatically that you're going to hate it. I think you'd be great in any position.

It's what I went to college for...I'm a writer...and thinking about not doing that anymore bums me out.

I've been EXTREMELY busy. In addition to training and teaching, I've picked up two other PT positions. One for extra money and insurance and the other for more moeny and fun. it's left me with little leisure time. i miss you guys! Back to your offer: Marketing can encompass so many different things and most companies have a marketing department. If you do take the position, you may have more opportunity to eventually move on to bigger things in the future. But DO NOT take it if you think you'll be unhappy. There's nothing worse than dreading goign to work everyday. i should know, I've been there. Good luck in whichever choice you make.
