Today is no different. But I have our Radioactive Materials License file all out on my desk and floor, and I have to admit, if I looked in my office at me and these files, I look pretty damn busy!

Co-sign to LOADS in this thread. Yesterday, I was supposed to go to a Training session (that I did know about) but managed to get out of. The person in charge came up to me about half an hour after it started and asked why I wasn't attending. First, I feigned surprise and tried to get out of it. Then, when she got a bit more persistent, I gave her some schpiel about how ridiculous it was expecting us to train on a Monday morning - our busiest time of the week - when I had loads of work to do and all the weekend's emails to pick up as well. What I actually meant was: "Do you realise I haven't been on Prince Org all weekend and I have loads to catch up on???!". Anyway, it worked.

Oh, that seems to happen to me a lot these days! And the fact that I don't have internet access and that I can't talk to almost any of my colleagues doesn't exactly help... I'm just sitting there, sometimes for hours and hours, trying to do something entertaining but inconspicuous. This is what I've come up with so far: 1) In the morning before work, I copy a bunch of news articles, film reviews etc off the internet and paste them into a word document. I then make sure there are no bold-faced headlines or other stuff that could reveal what I'm reading. 2) I sometimes push the computer really close to my chest and open up a Reversi game in a tiny window. If somebody walks by, I click on the document underneath which then covers it up. 3) I write down random thoughts, almost as if I'm writing a diary. 4) I study Japanese (they're actually okay with that). 5) I write lengthy e-mails to people in Word, so that I can copy them into Hotmail when I get home. 6) I keep track of where my money goes by making detailed notes describing my expenses the previous day/week. I also plan how much I can save and spend the rest of the month. 7) I make endless lists of things: the ten greatest low budget movies ever, wishes for my birthday, people I would invite to my wedding if I ever had one etc etc. Feel free to add more suggestions. I need them! So when am I getting a lengthy email? And I will say, when I do have the org up at work, it is in a fairly tiny window (so I can click anything else to pull over it) and most of my work-postings/orgnotes are typed into Outlook, and then furtively copy/pasted. |
