A friend of mine, a real Rubens-like lady that loves cooking and eating, has got a new job in a store that has her walking stairs ALL day.
A store that has three floors and an office and warehouse on two seperate floors. She has SLIMMED like crazy. So get a house and start walking stairs. Serious.

It's been quite inspiring reading this thread.
To all those who are trying to lose weight, get fit or just doing exercise for the hell of it - I have much respect. I've been thinking a lot about this recently. I'll be honest, I'm lucky in that I'm not so much overweight as out of shape. Or at least I think so. Everybody else seems to think I look okay but it's just something I want to sort out. I can put on weight quite easily but - God knows how - I seem to be able to lose it too. But I know it's not that simple for a lot of people; far from it. I've spent much of my life doing what I want, when I want, and having those asthma attacks recently have put a few things into perspective. Like Anx said, I lost a bit of weight as a result but I don't think I'm looking particularly better for it. If anything, I look like I need a good meal - I've been too thin and pale recently. Basically, I think it's vital I take up some form of excercise (there was a time when - despite the drinking that went with it - a few hours on the dancefloor, shaking my ass, on a Saturday night was all I needed. ). But I've got to the point where Mother Nature's giving me gentle reminders and pokes in the ribs and I'd be stupid to ignore it. But just the thought of going to the gym or doing it - I don't know what it is - fear, laziness, I'm not sure. How do you break that barrier? All I know is that I want the results but doing it is a different matter. I'd be a millionaire if I had a quid for every single time I've thought about it. So to all you guys dieting, exercising, pushing yourselves AND looking after yourselves - Keep up the good work.

i've been having a problem getting back into the swing of going to the gym. i went last saturday for the first time since i've gotten over my illness and it was overall a great thing...but my energy seems to come and go still, and i have to remind myself that i'm not completely 100% recovered and i have to get my daily routine and my diet back in order before i can consider myself "back to normal". still, that part of me that wants to go to the gym 3 or 4 times a week is still there...it's just that my body is having a tough time catching up. it's frustrating.

How do you get over that initial 'I've-never-been-to-a-gym-before-and-need-to-go-but-something-is-stopping-me' thing?

How do you get over that initial 'I've-never-been-to-a-gym-before-and-need-to-go-but-something-is-stopping-me' thing? just go. grab your headphones, get a bottle of water, pack a bag with your gym clothes, and go. start out on a treadmill or on an elliptical machine. they're easy to figure out and you could easily do thirty minutes of cardio, which would kind of make you comfortable with the surroundings. then, when the gym isn't so foreign to you anymore, check out the exercise machines. read the instructions. watch other people using them. teach yourself. that's what i did. it's really not as intimidating as it looks.

Doctors are way too expensive these days. I figure the more I work out now, the less problems I'll have in my later years. Back in the day, health was the last thing on my mind, because I thought I'd live forever. Sh!t changes as you grow older. It's great watching people's eyes bulge when I tell them my age, so I'm doing something right. [Edited 5/16/06 6:23am]

Making little changes to your lifestyle can do wonders for you. Instead of using the elevator/escalator, take the stairs....walk intead of taking the bus(if possible)....put down the chocolate and have an apple....if you get the junk food urge, drink some water. Believe me, it works. [Edited 5/16/06 6:33am]

Ive a couple of mates who've said I should come with them and they'll teach me about everything, which I would do but I cant afford it. Also, lots of people seem to get free passes for their friends to go with them, see if your mates have any? It mould be easier than taking that first step alone...

I do know quite a few people who go but I'm not sure whether it's the gym that I want to do. I just want some sport to jump out and go 'Do me!', basically. But I do know that - once you start going to the gym - it gets addictive. I could do with a bit of that.

So maybe you could go for a little while to test the water. I want to take up running. I will get around to it, I will! I have a decent excuse at the moment - I need a very good sports bra and I cant afford one!!

oh my god, that is EXACTLY my problem. I bought a cheap sports bra from JC Penneys for $5, which kind of does the trick, but not good enough - I flop around way too much when I run or play tennis. It's embarrassing but also PAINFUL! Good sports bras run $30+ and I just don't have that kind of money to spend like that. I mean, like, where is the sun?
