That it's a horrible cliché to go over to Iceland for a vacation.

Well, I'm glad your party-poop self won't be going with me then.

how is the art scene out there?

Iceland has more people whom describe their full-time occupation as "artist", than any other country in the world.

Yeah, I saw that in another thread about Iceland that PurpleHippie started...but I guess I'm a little in the dark about just how "public" the artist community is in Iceland. Seems like a no-brainer that it would be very visible, but hey - never been there, don't know.

I'm doing some reading up and getting a little bit more informed. I'm looking for info about galleries and not finding a whole lot...which isn't to say there aren't a kajillion other things I wanna do when I'm there.

I just found a nice site that has a directory of Icelandic artists and many of the subpages have samples of their art: http://english.umm.is/UMM.../Artists/A

And here's a site about Icelandic culture, with links to art galleries and more stuff about cultural activity in the country:
http://www.culture.is

And here's the website of the annual Reykjavík Arts Festival: http://www.listahatid.is/...lang_id=en

Generally speaking, I would say that Icelanders have a fairly good knowledge of the English language.... If you're interested in learning more about the Icelandic language, like for instance the unique name system, here's a nice brochure: http://bella.mrn.stjr.is/.../enska.pdf

Here are some interesting facts about the language from that brochure:
Icelandic is by and large the language that the Nordic people
spoke in the Middle Ages throughout most of the Nordic countries
as well as in demarcated regions of England, Ireland,
Scotland (along with the Shetland Islands, the Orkney Islands
and the Hebrides), some parts of France and Russia and as far
south as Constantinople. Icelandic was also the language of
Leifur Eiríksson who went to America in 1000.

well, if nothing else, i read that the sheep outnumber the people four to one, and i know how to say "BAAAAA". of course, that won't make for very stimulating conversation. redface

fortunately, i have a guide with a little bit of english to icelandic translation for the basic stuff, but it sounds like i won't be sunk speaking english...

thanks...it may be a bit of a tall order to save money and budget for this trip, but i'm bound to do it. this has been such a crummy year so far, and i don't think it's going to get a whole lot better...i want to have something overwhelmingly exciting and positive to look forward to for 2007. nod

Actually according to recent numbers the number of sheep in Iceland is approx. 450.000 which means about 1.5 sheep for every person geek
And the sheep here actually speak Icelandic... they say "meeee" (pronounced like the "me" in men)..... oh well, it's getting late here in Iceland (23:45) and I have a long workday tomorrow so I'd better go to sleep..... Time to count some sheep sheep biggrin
