Are You ever ASKED to do anything UNETHICAL at Work?

I don't mean like whistleblowing unethical or anything, but just something that doesnt' make you feel great about what you're doing.

Like when the boss says "this is strictly hush hush".

Well? Why the FUCK should it be hush hush if what we are doing is ok? hmm

It sucks.

Call me old fashioned or idealistic, but if your business model is fair and honest, there is no reason to keep anything hush hush.

I'm not talking about screwing the customer here--I'm talking about just your average day-to-day shop operations with your own employees. Thank god I kiss enough ass to be on the "inside" of that perverted circle. sigh

i had a temp job as executive assistant at a non-profit benefitting people with HIV/AIDS, and my boss made me go to his house and feed his dog and bring his mail back to the office. i really didn't understand what that had to do with the mission of the agency, but whatever. i found a better job and was able to walk out on his ass.

I work at a pet shop now. I have to do a lot of things that tear me up inside, and when I try to convince people otherwise they just get mad at me.

Like putting "small" goldfish (AKA baby pond fish that get a foot long) in a tiny plastic container with no filtration and no intention to clean it, and I'm supposed to say yea that's fine, stunting their growth is great for their health and they'll live at least a week in that tank, and I totally condone this!
Or selling two fish to someone who thinks they're pretty, regardless of my telling them they'll definitely not get along, probably kill each other or just die of stress.
Or selling a lizard (this just makes me sick) to someone who is standing right there telling me they're not willing to buy the proper lighting and they'll feed it whatever they want, despite my repeated attempts to explain how to care for it, and if I refuse to sell it to them they'll just buy it some place else and they'll tell my boss I refused the sale. They won't even take the care sheets I made.

How's that for doing unethical things you that drive you insane...
I reject your reality and substitute my own. nutty

a lawyer i used to work for came to my house one sunday and asked me to forge a letter to cover up the fact that he was dipping into some clients' money. i kicked him out of my house. he was disbarred later, and i've heard he's died. very sad all the way around.

mad I was told to "start shredding" back in the old enron days...although I didn't work at enron but a telecommunications company that was quickly going under. I worked in HR and was one of the last ones to go. I gave myself the pink slip...
That whole year kicked my ass and robbed me of any semblance of spirituality I might've had. mad

Yes. I worked at three different vet clinics, and two of them were wonderful, but the third. . . well, less so. Two things come to mind.

First of all, one of the vets would do tail dockings. He wanted me to hold puppies while he cut their tails off with no anesthesia (which is the normal way of doing it, btw). I refused. To his credit, he didn't hold it against me. I did hold the puppies in warm blankets afterwards and give them bottles, though, so they wouldn't go into hypoglycemic shock from the stress. sigh

And one time I was asked to participate in one of the few euthanasias that ever made me uncomfortable. Normally I felt confident that people understood their options and that we were doing something that was at least arguably best for the animal. But there was one day when some people wanted to drop off a cat who we had never seen before to be euthanized 'cause he had stopped eating and was "dying". Normally the vets would insist on an appointment, but it was a really busy day (no excuse, in my mind). Well, the people drop the cat off, and there was obviously something wrong with him, but I've seen a lot of dying cats, and this wasn't one of them. So I quiety went back and warmed up a dish of food for him. He at it right up. I brought this to the attention of the vet, but he wasn't really interested. Again, I refused to assist in the euthanasia, but. . . dammit. I almost quit that day. I did end up leaving shortly thereafter.

I'm happy to say, though, that in years of working with animals, I don't have a lot of those stories. I mostly worked with really excellent vets.

one place was had five different corporate entities.
i can see a logical reason for three of those
but i think they were mainly for shuffling money around to avoid paying taxes. neutral
so i didn't really have to participate in that
but i did have knowledge of what was going on
but what do i know? it might be common practise neutral

That pisses me off that certain breeds of dogs have their tails docked. Is there any legitimate reason for this practice?

NO, there is not. The only legitimate reason to dock a tail is injury/disease, in which case it should be done under general anesthesia. Tail docking should be illegal.
