I call Sofia Coppola's bluff: The dialogue simply wasn't that deep, the characters simply not that interesting. The only great thing about that film was the ending, which was beautifully handled.
mmhmm I second that emotion. I actually managed to stay awake for the entirety of the film and then fell asleep during the last 5 minutes. I mean, like, where is the sun?

This is frightening because when I went to netflix to add Men Beneath the Sun as mentioned on the horror films thread, I added Shopgirl on a whim cause netflix suggested it and it sounded semi-interesting. Maybe I should go remove it. Well, it really comes down to whether or not you are interested in the premise or not. And can stand Claire Danes and Jason Schwartzman (I have a low tolerance for both).

See, I had the same EHNC feeling. Totally. I even thought the opening shot was gratuitous and pretentious (the latter applying to most of the film). The karaoke scene's impact on their relationship was all too obvious. The ending was OK, the best part.

It shows the low quality of young thinking, or MTV comedy axis, the tilt that has cut the balls from what was once clever comedy. There is nothing clever or funny about the movie. Actually, me and my sister tried to watch it, but actually turned the dvd off, and never finished watching it.
The only thing good thing about it is the clever opening credits. All you others say Hell Yea!!

I kept waiting for it to be funny. It just never got there. gotta watch it again. i had never heard of this movie, then my sister and our friends were telling me how hilarious it was. they were quoting it all the time and laughing their butts off! i finally watched it and sat there the whole time thinking how stupid it was. i kept waiting for the plot to develop. i was supremely disappointed. BUT THEN.... i watched it a second time. and the second time, when i had no expectations, it was the funniest thing i'd ever seen! i absolutely love it!! definitely an instant classic for me! i quote it all the time, and every time i see it again it cracks me the hell up!! i can't stop laughing!! so, give it a try again. this time with no expectations. if you still hate it, then so be it. but i think you'll love it!

The movie is sheer genius. And very very very funny. Just the recounting of Pedro of his day home sick.... is sick, laugh at loud funny.
But it's a very nonconformist, original flavor. If you like the discipline of Kubrick and Landis, and the ugliness of Lynch and Waters.... this is a flower bloomed from all that kind of soil.... If you take away the Lynch and Waters and just leave the rest, a flower might bloom from Wes Anderson... American Pie and Wedding Crashers... thumbs down... 40 Year Old Virgin... thumbs up! I agree with your comments on ND and LIT. ND is just plain not fucking funny AT ALL, and LID tries to be deep and meaningful while really only being fairly dull. The world is a comedy for those who think and a tragedy for those who feel.

I feel like I could've possibly liked Napoleon Dynamite, but by the time I saw it I was so tired of hearing it's jokes parroted over and over again by it's fans that it was really hard to enjoy.
Honestly, if you're a fan of a comedy, and you want someone else to enjoy it, just make a passive suggestion and be leave it at that. Hearing movies quoted endlessly always ends up ruining them for me. ~ I'D BUY THAT FOR A DOLLAR ~

Napolean Dynamite is just one of those movies, you either get, or you don't. Like Garden State. Napolean is the underdog. The kid who gets picked on, the one who everyone teases. Yet at the end he gets the girl. The characters are so quirky they're unique

It's one of those movies (for me anyway) that got better the more I saw it. I'd watch it, and every time see more of the little details in the background that I hadn't noticed before.
But then, I think I saw it at a good time, before it became over-hyped. I truly didn't know what to expect when I watched it. I didn't think it was really funny at all (except for the Glamour shots scene ) the first time I watched it.
