I just heard a horrible story about one of our local groomers. She was attacked by a BIG dog, standard poodle she is still recovering and is just now back at work. The attack was last August. I knew I hadn't seen her around and so when she got back and I saw her well I was like what happened and she told me. She is still grooming and has been to see that dog several times during her recovery. She insisted that the dog not be put down, she's a real advocate for animals and loves what she does. I truly admire her. She's not afraid of my big man at all calls him cupcake lol

she's been a groomer for 35 years.

Thats something.
I admire groomers. I took my dog (a doberman) to the groomer. And she treated my dog like she was one of those teeny tiny fluffy dogs. She wasnt afraid at all and she treated her so well. Most people freak out big time when they see my dog

I've done some grooming as part of my vet work, and worked with groomers. Honestly, I think it's kinda thankless. Cranky critters, picky owners. . . for maybe-sorta-ok pay. . . bah.

The only thing I thought was nice about it was minimal interaction with people. mr.green

And the dogs are awfully cute when they're done. mushy

It makes sense that it'd be more profitable if you can do it from home. nod

I would love to get a job grooming dogs (and cats too). I took my one kitty to a groomer to be groomed once, because he has long hair and had nasty tangles in it. I helped the groomer hold my kitty down while she bathed and brushed him. She told me that I did a good job, was very patient, and that I would be good working with animals. mushy That would be right up my alley, BUT, I'm not sure how much it pays.
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

I went to grooming school for ten weeks, but I had a little experience working with dogs prior to that.

The money can be good or not depending on a lot of things like cost of living in your area, who you work for/what they pay. I like working for myself. I rent space in a vet clinic and run my own business. The money (for my area) is great. I currently charge (on average) $30 an hour and it will soon go to $35. For my rural, low cost of living area, it's very good money. If one can work at home, of course, their profit margin will increase.

When I first started out, the money really sucked. I had to build a steady clientele taking on the good, bad, ugly and cheap. It can be physically demanding. In the beginning, one needs to take into account that they will be really slow and therefore unable to do many dogs which will mean you won't make much money unless prices are really high. That's unlikely when one is first starting out unless they go to a top school that's turning out competition quality groomers and then you have to hope there's a market for that where you are. In my rural area, there isn't, but I like to develop those skills just so I could work anywhere.

I love my job! I'm glad I stuck through the first couple of years of utter crappiness. I have to be honest, though... if I didn't have another income when I first started, I would never have made it. I'm sure others have just fine, though.

Hey, you Dobe folks, I love them, too. My favorite breed is Standard Poodles (I have two), but I fell in love with Dobes a couple of years ago when we adopted a paraplegic guy. He was awesome. We lost him suddenly to bloat. Now we're fostering a three legged Dobe girl. We've really gotten attached to these special needs Dobermans. I never knew before how eerily intelligent and elegant these dogs really are. I imagine my household will always have at least a Doberman and a Standard Poodle.

The groomer that trims my 12 yr old miniature Schnauzer has the patience of a saint. He is a bad boy- very high strung- she has been cutting him for almost 4 yrs- I always tip her- she puts up with a lot all day.
She loves my Willie boy a lot and I am glad I found her.
