It probably wasn't your intention but hearing that is really reassuring for guys like me who are in creative jobs they love but without the money. I'm constantly freaked out by everyone around me who's in banking, law etc and who have a certain amount of stability.
Every two months or so I start getting paranoid that I should have a grown up job by now... rolleyes

I'm in retail, and I feel like the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence..sometimes I dream about having an office with a secretary...a desk to put my feet up on..
dealing with the public is no picnic. Sometimes there are rewards like when people write notes to thank you for some service you did for them, but for the most part, peoples can be assholes. I think being in an office away from the public would be a good change..

So, this will be my third day at a new job. People are out of the office a lot, so it's quiet. The woman who is training me is very laid-back. It's kind of hippy. . . the people who don't see clients are in jeans and sandals, there is a whole cupboard full of herbal tea. . . there is a giant jar full of dried mushrooms on the table in the break room whofarted . . . and a lot of our clients are kids, so there are toys everywhere. It's pretty clear that I'm going to be the most neat-and-organized type there, which is scary, 'cause I'm really not neat and organized. But thus far, I think it's going to be a better fit for me, culturally, than anyplace else I've worked.

wow. that sounds crunchy. but nice smile

my workplace is VERY informal and crazy. For those who don't know, I work at the MN AIDS Project. Our agency does the whole range of HIV services from prevention and testing to case management and financial assistance. We have no dress code. The outreach staff area is filled with porn and dildos. We have vagina models and penis dummies. Condoms and lube. You know, the standards.

I LOVE IT.

Of course, we are a building full of passionate-political-social servicey- nutjobs so, sometimes things get VERY intense. But it's all good.

where i used to work would make for a good sitcom or something. It was an animal hospital in manhattan

every man was gay except for one and he was trying HARD to sleep with me.

the office manager was a drama queen who chased off one of the vets one saturday and tried to chase me off on another saturday (i showed his ass...)
he would also talk shit about employees behind their back to other employees. yeah, he was real professional

there was one female doctor who had the rage in her. she was pretty fun to be around at times. she eventually moved and i'm hoping she's happier.

there were lots of out of work actors waltzing in and out and doing stints as receptionists. In fact the office manager and the head receptionist were both in the biz but gave it a rest after a while.

the head vet had a very old dog who used to bark at everyone who walked through the door. that dog was freakin' awesome.

the house cat had a tilted head and used to drag towels up into the reception area and perform..ahem..an erotic showcase with them. giggle

some of the clients were freakin' insane.

i'm glad to be in school now.

The last place I worked at was a flowershop with a bunch of middle aged ladies who watched too much Desperate Housewives. Cattyness was the order of the day, although it was always kept to a whisper. I didn't care about any of the drama and they accepted that.

Overall it wasn't a bad place to work. I dealt with some of the worst customers I could ever have hoped for (I didn't figure I'd encounter many assholes working at a flowershop, but good lord was I wrong) and sometimes the schedule was bastardly, but there was no uniform and and they let me listen to David Bowie. On top of that they didn't ask me to wash my hair or stop smelling like pee.

I use to work at a police department. The culture sucked on many levels for many reasons.

I left there because I'd been there for over 3 years and the awkwardness never wore off. I was never accepted by the crew, which wasn't a big deal until they started messing with my evaluations.

So at the first opportunity I moved on. Went back to school and now I'm about to start my new career. I went to the police dept today to get a reference from the one person that was decent to me. Two people were nice to me. The rest of them were their normal shitty selves.

I'M SO GLAD I MOVED ON!!!! woot!
I'm firmly planted in denial

whenever i go to work, i feel like i'm in a todd haynes movie, like "safe" or something. when claire had that temp job on "six feet under", i could really relate to how freaked out she was by the way people were acting in a corporate office. fortunately my job isn't THAT bad, but people just act like freaks and we all have to just sort of absorb it as long as their work is good. i'd love to work from home or work for myself one day...but right now, i'm just happy to be working.

Oh man, I would looooove to work for myself and not have a boss to answer to. I hate relying for someone else for my livelihood, and I'm not too crazy about corporate America (it bites). Does anyone feel this way, or is it just me? I find myself daydreaming of winning the lottery (even though I never play it lol) and going into my job and quitting right there on the spot. That would feel soo damn good to say, "I'm outta here, take this job and SHOVE IT!". lol lol
RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

i work in an office of three. the other two are nice, they really are but they are so str8 laced it's unbelievable. they geek out all the time. actually, one of them i can is dying to break out of the str8 laced sometimes but she's so tied down. makes me laff.

there's no risk taking in what we do. unfortunately i am the 'junior' member of the team.
