For any interested Rand fans, Angelina and Brad are apparently in talks for Atlas Shrugged. :-) Ayn Rand is my absolute favorite philosopher and writer -- I have all her novels in leather and an oil portrait of her hanging in my library.
And since I'm a huge Angelina fan as well ...imagine my surprise Friday when I Googled Angie and found she and Brad may star in the film adaptation of Rand's masterpiece "Atlas Shrugged" ! ! OMG! If ever there was someone to play Dagny Taggart, it's Angelina. I am not convinced however that Brad can pull off John Galt... he could do Hank Rearden though...anyway I am on the verge of tears imagining Angie in a Rand project. The director of Ray is supposedly doing it, which could prove great. After the horrilble screw up of The Fountainhead on film, this could be huge! I know Ayn really wanted to see this done before her death...if she were alive, I think she would approve... The worldwide distribution rights have just been picked up by Lionsgate. The book itself narrates the volatile events that follow an economic collapse in the U.S., and is often seen as Rand's most far-reaching statement of her Objectivist philosophy. Atlas was published in 1957; several previous attempts have been made to bring the book to the big screen. At one time, a miniseries of the 1,100 page book was in the works, but that too was abandoned. Perhaps the power couple's involvement will help the movie get off the ground for good this time. Personally, I find Rand's self-styled philosophy of virtuous self-centeredness, megalomaniacal rationalizations and raging capitalist freedom rather scary, but then, all these elements plus two good-looking actors might conspire to make an amazing movie. Lionsgate snapped up distribution rights and Angelina Jolie, a big Rand fan, is said to be considering taking the lead role as Dagny Taggart. Brad Pitt, a big fan of Angelina Jolie, is a possibility to take the male lead of John Galt. Talks about adapting Shrugged to big screen has been going on for so many years that Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, and Clint Eastwood have been attached to previous incarnations of the project that were later aborted. Atlas Shrugged is a behemoth at over 1,100 pages, and could be used a deadly weapon if need be. The book is going to have to be seriously sliced and diced or it could be the longest movie in the history of mankind. And even though we don't mind looking at the beautiful couple on the big screen, the concept of watching them for nine plus hours is a tad daunting. Jennifer Aniston has not yet been contacted for a comment, but we suspect after she does opine on the subject, our next headline will be: "Jen Shrugged." | |

I wonder if they'll make it comtemporary times. I think yes. It would be interesting to see how they handle today's modern technology in that story context. Computer companies making excuses for faulty programs while the CEOs get rich? Oh, wait that's real life. No More Haters on the Internet. | |

[Edited 4/29/06 12:36pm] Ayn as a writer ...hmm...her writing is very straightforward, no flowery language or lofty words. You won't need a dictionary. She's easy to read, but it's the interpretation (of her scenes, characters, themes, plot) that escapes, enrages, and inspires people. Because she values things society may condemn (selfishness, egoism, sometimes anarchy, atheism, etc.) her writing can often be misinterpreted and maligned: think Robbie from Dirty Dancing who holds one of her books in his hand in a scene....Dirty Dancing is a wonder ode to the themes and passions of Rand, by the way...Johnny and Baby are very basic, simplistic versions of Rand characters). Her word choice is skeletal like a poet's (even though her books are huge  )...every word, image, quote has been chosen precisely to convey something.
Because she is a philosopher, every character is driven by a philosophy and represents something...so her writing is interesting because you have to interpret why a character was motivated to act as he or she did. There are no random plot points in her novels ....once you know why a character did something ...you'll be forced to ask what you would have done ...and are you a noble, independent-thinking, individual. Some folks have said Ayn Rand's books changed their lives more than the Bible. OThers have called Ayn a cultist. You might find her characters to be arrogant egotists. Or you might find them to be hereos that prove idealism is not just for kids ...and even when an adult faced with hard choices you can choose the Ideal and not compromise your integrity. Her women heroines are strong, intelligent and powerful. But they are still male worshippers. Ayn reveres Man as the ultimate creation capable of great things. I do too. You might find her writing to be a bit dry and unemotional (except for We the Living about Soviet Russia -- this may be my favorite Rand novel). When I read Rand ...I"m crying, underlining, thinking, writing in my journal ...planning my journey toward integrity. Hope that helps!  [Edited 4/29/06 13:24pm] | |

I think if Ayn met Tolstoy, she'd kick him in the nuts.
In the "The Romantic Manifesto" she admits ambivalent feelings toward his writing. I don't have that book around me right now ...but I remember she said something bad about him.

Given the type of political work Angelina does, I'm sort of surprised she'd be an Ayn Rand fan. She seems far more social-minded.(Now her personal life -- or at least the glimpses we see of it -- seems almost completely Objectivist.)

I like both of them as actors, although I don't know how well they match up with the characters. Brad has a good history of picking interesting projects. I think he's been in more good films than Jolie has. | |

That's a really good point!! I hadn't considered that. I wonder how Angie reconciles that. Ayn definitely doesn't believe in unearned handouts to help the poor ...but she would believe in alliances with them as they try to reach their potential. But then again, I love Rand and have conflicting views as well ...I'm definitely more spiritual (although not in a traditonal sense). | |

I think he's been in more good films than Jolie has. True. I'm not a fan of Brad, but he definitely picks more daring and interesting projects than Angelina, who, incidentally, I like better. I remember in the Sense of Life movie it talks about how Ayn loved Marilyn Monroe ...and I thought WTF?...she acted like a weak little sex toy ...but their similarities were on a personal level too ...Ayn loved MM's overcoming spirit and passion for life ...which the blonde had in spades eveytime she walked into the room. | |
