I am so pissed off at our vet right now just went in to the vet and got home really pissed off. it started a while ago when my dog became more and more ill with his stomach and had to throw up regularly. took him in to the vet who didn't even bother to take an xray of his tummy and just sent me home (after much complaining from me) with pills and some new formula of food that would make everything better. things didn't really change so they put him on yet another type of food as i became increasingly infuriated over the fact that they didn't bother to take an xray even the second time. anyways, with a lot of patience and my own formula of rice and chicken and a small portion of his original food i got him to become better. but now, thanks to the damned food from the vet his teeth got all ruined with a thick coating of smut which has to be surgically removed. which really totally freaked me out since he's 5 now and i've always been brushing his teeth and they were excellent up to two months ago before he went on the vet's food. they claim it's nothing to do with that and they even went as far as to say that it must be something else (anything, except for them) so just now i had to drop him off to get his teeth cleaned. went in and this woman just rushed in and started shaving some hair off his paw, at which i said "i don't know what you're doing but this dog is not going to like that, i advise you to just give him the shot in his back or neck since that is where he always gets his shots because he is very sensitive in his paws" yeah, well, she said this was the only way and that it had to be shot in his vein for him to fall asleep rapidly. stupidly, i said "well ok than let's try it" fcuz this didn't work since he jerked away his paw, growled like a rabid wolf and launched the syringe across the room. "oh, he's a very angry violent dog" she concluded and proceeded to bind his mouth shut with a piece of cord at which he became very stressed and started whining like a puppy i got so mad that i told her "look lady, if you touch his paw again i'm gonna trash your office ok, so put the syringe in his neck or i'm out of here". all of a sudden it was ok to give him the shot somewhere else then they wanted to take him away before he even fell asleep since they had more people waiting and he'd taken up enough time already. so i just gave them this look at which they backed off quietly and said "ok, how about we leave you alone with him for a while and as soon as he's ready you can call us" he's on the op table right now I think and they'll call me as soon as he's waking up. but this is the last time i've been to that vet. i'm gonna look for another one now cuz they continually tick me the f off sunbathing and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Hey Lars,
Sounds like that vet needs a shot in her neck, more like. I hope all goes well and your dog's feeling better soon.

They sound horrid, and they're meant to be the ones who treat animals well.
Loving the sunbathing photo by the way, I'm glad he's not as ill as he was. --ยปYou're my favourite moment, you're my Saturday...

Loving the sunbathing photo by the way, I'm glad he's not as ill as he was. he's actually doing very well again at the moment. i still think he had something wedged in his stomach or intestines and that it just came out after a while, it's the only explanation i have. the sunbathing pic is one i took with the webcam. it was winter and he just can't wait for summer to arrive when i can leave the office door open and he can lay there sunbathing. but in winter whenever the sun does shine he follows it across the floor all day with his back lying on the heated tiles and his tummy up toward the sun lol. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

i'm gonna call them in 30 minutes to see if they're done
with cleaning his teeth and to ask if i can come pick him up. they told me 02:00, which is just not acceptable for some procedure that takes 30 minutes. why would they need to keep him there for over 5 hours? just to have him wake up from his sedation? i can look after him at home and keep him warm and all. but let's wait what they have to say before i go mental and "serenity now" on their asses and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

A) This was a true Serenity Now moment...
B) You could have flipped-the-fuck-out on them and it would have been totally approriate. You're so right to find a new vet. No one should treat your baby that way!

vets-robbing posh upper class 'no cap on fees' thieving bastards
i work in intensive care and the main sedative we use is propofol-same as a vet-however funny how a bottle is roughly 7 quid-yet a vet will charge up to FIVE HUNDRED QUID to knock your dog out

and he's doing quite well. his teeth look absolutely amazing.
clean white and polished, ready for biting old lady's ankles. he's still not really out of the sedative state and when he tries to walk he kind of falls on his face so i have to stay close to him all the time because he always wants to follow me wherever i go and he can't do that now since he can't get up on his own. he knows he's cute and sad right now so he's abusing that to the maximum lol. he's got me wrapped around his paw. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I called that about 2 hours after i brought him in and they said he was waking up but they wanted to keep him there for another 4 hours (!!) to see how he was doing. so i just got in my car and picked him up. fcuz there was another argument when i wanted to take him home. so i said "listen, you guys have him in the back on recovery with other animals and you are checking up on them every half hour, i know how this works. so i will take him home where he can ly in his basket wrapped up in a blanket next to my desk, so i'll do a better job of this in any case" now gimme my dog back so i took him home and he's just resting now. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

Even though the procedure itself takes 30 minutes, they have to wait for him to go under, do the procedure, and then wait for him to wake up and be alert enough to go home. Not to mention that there are probably other procedures going on that day. I used to work in a veterinary hospital and for some reason the fact that we saw more animals than just their's and that anesthesia takes some time to recover from were the hardest concepts for clients to understand. Clients would drop off their pet at 8:00am and then call at 8:30am asking if they could pick their pet up yet even though it was explained to them multiple times that they could not pick up until 5:00pm AND they had to sign an agreement. A veterinary hospital, while being a hospital, is a business as well and must see more than one pet a day to survive. As far as your dog's teeth being ruined by the food that they gave you, it's not likely. They most likely became ruined from the constant vomitimg. Besides, even if you brush your dog's teeth regularly, you should still get his teeth professionally cleaned at least once a year. I have no idea why your vet didn;t do an x-ray on your dog's stomach to check for a foreign object but sometime's that's not really needed. The most common sign of a foreign object lodged in the intestines is diarrhea and vomiting accompanied by an unwillingness to eat. But still...better safe than sorry, your vet could have at least discussed the option with you. And the scene with the IV sedative...well, that shoulld have been done in another room without you present. Yes, without you present. Very rarely did we even take blood from an animal in front of the client because the client freaks out more than the animal. The animal is stressed already because it's in the vet's office but then you have the fact that their owner is there watching them and doing nothing while they're getting treated. It's horrible. So we did most of that stuff in another room and the pet was usually much calmer. Even if we were giving an intramuscular shot for sedation we would ask the owner to leave because so many people freak out when they see their pet starting to go under. Anyways, that's my two cents from the other side of the desk.

Your story made me upset. Good vets can be hard to find. I hope you find someone better.
I had a vet tell me my dog couldn't be sick with a certain ailment because he wasn't old enough. I was like "He's 13." The doctor was like, "Oh, he's that old?" WTF! He always looked and acted young for his age, but that's just ridiculous. The vet had his records right there and we've been going to the same vet for years. I told my mom not to take our pets there anymore.
