its the cycle of life i suppose.... well, my girlfriend from Kansas City brought me a gecko about a month ago. it was the class pet in her son's class at school... they asked if we were interested in it since her child had won it in a class drawing for it and then decided he really wasnt the one to care for it.
my son said he was excited about taking the lil guy in, and we made a place for the new cage here and prepared for the new arrival. when it got here, i knew immediately something was really wrong with this poor lil guy.... first of all, the guy wasnt a 'guy' at all, it was a girl. secondly, she was very sick and almost deformed looking. we took her into see the reptile specialist up at the pet store.... he said, yes, this is what happens when you dont feed them the calcium they need. and the tank wasnt kept at the right temp either, plus noone had assisted her with the shedding and the skin on her toes had built up and was causing her 'fingers' to fall off noones fault really... im sure noone taught the teacher how to care for the lil girl.... but, either way, the baby was very sickly. my son and i tried for the whole month to get her to eat, very little success. she wasnt even drinking water like she should.... yesterday we took her in to see the guy at the pet store again and had to have her put down my son felt horrible about it but understood that she was suffering and there was no way to bring her back around. my daughter was so mad at us.... today, we went back to the petstore, it was a birthday celebration there - this is an independently owned store, its awesome !!! we stayed there with them for like 2 hours playing silly games and getting cool stuff.... we got 2 (30 dollar) collars for our dogs for 12 cents a piece (its the 12th birthday celebration). get this, they had a CHOCOLATE CRICKET EATING TABLE... and both of my kids ate one anyway, i thanked the man again for helping us with our situation. we came home, and in the gecko's cage ????? a baby egg i have no idea if it will hatch or not, or even if its been fertilized. but, it was a nice gift after such a rough day yesterday.... i feel horrible, but even as the guy said, there was little, if anything, that could have been done to save her One of the best days of my life... http://prince.org/msg/100/291111

As I read this story, I kept saying, "Awwww!" out loud to myself. Stories like this always go straight to my heart, since I'm such a devout animal lover. I'm so sad to hear that you lost your gecko, she was so darn cute! Poor thing, at least she's not suffering anymore, but I know how hard it is to have to put an animal to sleep. It's probably one of the toughest things you'll ever have to do in life, especially when it was a childs' pet. It will be interesting to see if the egg hatches. Keep us posted on that. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you. | |
